Duplicated Securities - Inaccurate Portfolio Value

Quicken Mac has done a good job of tracking my investments for years. Recently I noticed that according to Quicken, I was much wealthier than I thought I was. My portfolio value is overstated by 62%. Looking into it I found Duplicate listings in the DASHBOARD, the ALLOCATION BY SECURITY and the TOP 1O MOVERS windows. Dupes like "Palo Alto Networks, Inc." and "PALO ALTO NETWORKS INC PANW;" "Vanguard S&P 500 Etf," and VNGRD S&P 500 ETF." Almost all of my securitis are duplicated in a similar manner. Also shown is a security I sold months ago. I most likely did not notice the problem immediately as I don't pay daily attention to the investments in Quicken, but is has been an isser for weeks now. My broker is RBC Wealth Management. Quicken Calssic Premier V 8.2.1 macOS 15.5. I already disconnected the account and reconnected, but that did not fix the issue.

This sometimes happens with brokerage accounts; they push out the funds with slightly different names for funds so you end up with your existing transactions plus the (same) new ones they added as if new.

The fix typically isn't hard. First, make a backup of your file. (File:Save a Backup)

Then, navigate to Window:Securities. Locate the two similar funds that should be the same. (command+click to select the two), and click Merge Securities at the bottom of the window. Follow the instructions which should be straightforward. You will want to use the new name your broker is using going forward.

    Repeat for each duplicate fund.

Assuming this isn't a fund conversion (i.e., it is a different fund/ticker), this should resolve the problem.

Thank you John. I will give it a shot.

Thanks John. Your suggested solution worked for most securities. The accound still shows about 17,000 more than it has. I can't pinpoint the source of that money but will keep looking.

    Thanks, Jim

    Thanks for the update.

This shouldn't be too hard to narrow down the final missing piece: Go into your portfolio view and examine you holdings, and compare that with RBC shows you have. Note any discrepancies. You also mentioned in your OP that you had an old fund that was previously sold off but is now showing. So, pay extra attention to that.

If the fund was indeed sold off but now again showing (or any fund has incorrect amounts), I would move to the Transactions view and scroll to the beginning of the register where your placeholders transx (balance adjustments for funds) reside.

I don't know/can't see this account, so I can't tell you if you need to delete or adjust placeholders. But, if the transactions in your file haven't changed, I would suspect the issue is there. I won't say with certainty, but I expect for you to find a placeholder for the fund you sold off (thusly adding it back in.)
