2FA with Etrade Not Working (Two Factor Authorization with ETrade)

Has anyone managed to get this to work reliably? I just turned on 2FA, and I'll tell you what, Quicken is handling it just terribly. Quicken just will not "remember" that it needs to ask for the 2FA code and just gives me the CC-503 error.

I have 2FA turned on for other accounts, and it works just fine.

Any ideas on how to make it work?

I googled "etrade, quicken, security code" and saw this post from a year ago which describes my experience. So I'm reposting in hopes to get some attention to the matter. I'm on Windows 11, using Quicken R64.30 build 27.1.64.30. In my case, to get the security prompt I have to click on my etrade checking account, and then click the gear icon → update now. When I click One-Step Update → All accounts, I get the CC-503. (This worked once during the session when I added etrade to Online setup. After quitting and restarting quicken, I now get the CC-503.)

I have been having this problem for a long time:

I have brokerage and banking accounts at e*Trade, and both of them are accessed with the same userID and password via Quicken E*TRADE.

The brokerage accounts update correctly, and apparently do not require me to enter the 2 factor authentication code. The E*Trade Bank accounts, however, do require the 2 factor code, but Quicken often (almost always) does not ask me for the code on the first try, and instead returns a CC-503 error. I then have to update again, and on the second try it ALWAYS asks for the code, and the update works correctly. I wish this bug could be fixed.

Some other things we can check:

Where is your file located?
Is your file being synced/backed up by any third-party cloud services, like iCloud, Dropbox, or OneDrive?

After reviewing your account internally, I can see the CC-503 issue you were having, but your latest attempts to update those E*trade appear successful. Are you still having this issue today?

It's happening when I run "one step update". If I reset online access, then it'll work one time before I get the error again. I just went into the password vault, deleted my password, and then ran one-step update, which of course prompted for my password. I entered it, the update ran, and then correctly prompted me for the 2FA. I noticed that in the password vault, I have two entries for E*Trade. One says it doesn't need a password. Maybe one of the entries is for the bank and the other is for the brokerage. I had not previously deleted the password in the Password Vault; maybe that will fix it. Up until now, I'd just been deactivating and, when that didn't work, resetting the accounts' online access.

After completing the above, closed Quicken, opened it again, and ran one-step update. It appears to have updated both E*Trade accounts, but without asking for the 2FA. That doesn't seem right . . . Or is that expected behavior?

Thank you for following up with those details.

Unless I am missing something, I think it is behaving as it should. Now that you deleted the password that didn't have the key icon next to it from the password vault, it is updating without any issue. The key icon indicates that a password is not needed for every update. It gets encrypted, so you don't have to enter it every time.

However, if you want it to prompt you for an MFA and have it set up that way from the E*Trade website, then it should be doing it.

Normally, with MFA issues, I would refer you to the financial institution, because those come directly from them. However, when checking internally, it looks like the last time you updated E*Trade was 10/16/25. It shows you were prompted for an MFA with that connection. If that is not the case and you did not receive an MFA, please contact Quicken Support directly so they can dig deeper into this issue.

OK, I'll probably contact Quicken Support. I just ran my one-step update again, and Quicken did not give me the MFA prompt. Instead, it gave me the CC-503 error. I clicked the Update button and manually entered my password, Quicken said "Success! You may now continue with the one-step update." When I continued, I got the error again. So I tried a third time, this time running one-step update on just my E*Trade accounts, and now Quicken is giving me the MFA prompt.

I know I'm not giving the most coherent description of the steps I've taken. I"ll have to take my time and take notes next time. Basically, I'm not getting the MFA prompt reliably, I think that's basically the problem I'm seeing at the user-end.

Hello! I'm a programmer on the Quicken Mac team. I personally have an E*TRADE account, and they recently made me enable MFA (using the "VIP Access" app) to access my account. I also had very similar issues to what you described here. I think it's a problem that either E*TRADE or our aggregation partner would have to investigate and fix, there's nothing that we can do to address it directly.

I ultimately just turned MFA off because I was so tired of it.

I've been an E*TRADE customer for over 17 years and love their products, especially the Max-Rate Checking account. I was very happy when Quicken first added support for E*TRADE Bank back in the Quicken Essentials for Mac days (when I first started working on it).

So just letting you know: you're not alone! Now that I've seen that it's possible to turn MFA off, I'll try turning it back on and then being an in-house guinea pig that our aggregation partner can use to troubleshoot the issue.

Just for the record, I thought I'd post now that I'm paying more attention to what is actually going on.

I have ten separate accounts in my One Step Update. Those ten accounts are spread across 8 different financial institutions. Two of the accounts are with Etrade - one is the bank, the other is with the brokerage. I have Multi-factor login turned on at most of the other institutions, but they all work by texting a code to my phone. I am able to say "remember this device" for all but one of those other institutions. So, Etrade and one other, Chase, are the only two financial institutions that always ask for my multi-factor login when I go to their website.

Quicken's one-step update has no problem with Chase. One-step update just runs and doesn't ask me for the code, it's like Quicken just bypasses that MF login. Maybe I entered the code once when I first set up the one-step update in Quicken, I don't recall.

In Quicken, one-step update never works the first time for either of the Etrade accounts. I always have to run it twice for Etrade. The second time, Quicken always asks me for the MF code, which I input and then the update continues normally.
