Changing The Currency Of A Security

I have been using Quicken for years. I have recently set up a USD denominated investment account to avoid having to pay for the conversion of CAD to USD for every purchase, sale or dividend associated with my USD investments. I already have a significant number of USD stocks that I have invested in, but through a CAD denominated investment account (both actual account and Quicken account). When these stocks were added to Quicken there was no other way to set them up other than having the currency of such stocks tagged as being CAD. Now that I have an actual USD denominated account that I have had all of my USD stocks transferred to, I have tried to enter a stock transfer transaction within Quicken to transfer those USD stocks to the newly established USD investment account in Quicken (from the CAD denominated investment account within Quicken). However, the system prevents that from happening with Quicken telling me that the underlying currency of such stock transfer needs to be the same from account to account. So, I then tried to just force the transfer by entering a sale transaction from the CAD account and a purchase in the USD account. The purchase was prevented because the USD stock is connoted as a CAD denominated stock in Quicken. So then I tried to edit the USD security, but Quicken does not allow the currency of such security to be modified. So then I tried to just modify the name (not the ticker as I want Quicken to be able to automatically track the value of my position), and that was also prevented by Quicken.

So, I am at a loss for how I can effect the transfer of these USD stocks within Quicken and would appreciate any help the community might be able to offer. I would hope that I do not have to delete all of my USD securities that were previously invested through a CAD denominated investment account.

Thanks in advance.

So as I understand this, you have had a security that is a USD-traded security with a US based ticker in your Quicken as a CAD based security in a CAD based account.

Now you have established a USD based account (in the real world and in Quicken). In the real world, you have moved those securities from the account they were in to this new real world account. You want to do the same in your Quicken records, right?

For example, let’s call this security Apple Corp, US ticker = AAPL. You have had this in your file as a CAD based security.

    a) You will need to have a second version of the security as a USD based security within Quicken. It needs to have a unique name, distinct from the CAD based security. You should be able to rename your existing security going to something like Apple Corp-CAD. I don’t know why that is not working for you. Your alternative is to create the new version as Apple Corp-USD. IMPORTANT: Create that new security manually to start without a ticker. You can then edit the security to add the AAPL ticker duplicating the ticker in use for your existing version. The two will share the same price history record, be that correct or not. That seems to be what you want.

    b) To accomplish the ‘transfer’, you are going to have to manage that manually. A Remove Shares from the existing account (the Apple Corp shares) and totally separately Add Shares in the new account (the Apple Corp-USD shares).
