Problem with balance (Q Mac)

Have had problems with my UMCU (Michigan) checking acct in Quicken off and on over the yrs so decided to ignore that I had a negative balance (column name) that grew and grew - now some 737k (as I monitor the correct balance). However, I do need to sort this out. I have tried to create a dummy transaction worth a (positive) 737k, but this only adds to the negative balance. I do not wish to close the account (with 4 yrs worth of otherwise accurate and useful data) and just start over. I use Quicken Classic Deluxe v.8.3.3 on a macOS (Sequoia) 15.6.1. While there are ways to adjust the balance, I think you need to figure out what is going on in the first place instead of masking the problem. If you don't, I suspect you never will work this out.

I first request that you File:Save a Backup before you do anything. That will be your safety net.

Since you said your manual adjusts only make the problem worse, let's start with the basics:

Make sure you are clicking on the actual account name in the sidebar, and not an account grouping. The name highlighted in the sidebar should match what is shown at the top of the register.

Is your running balance italicized? (This will show you are not sorted by date.) To sort by date, click on the date column header to make that the sort order. If your register is not sorted by date, the running balance is meaningless.

Also, click on the Reset Filters at the top of the register. Certain filters can hide transactions that again, would make your balance meaningless.

Let us know what you find. Your balance will likely still be far off as you made all these prior adjustments, but those can be deleted once you know you are sorted by date with no filters applied.

Once you do the above, we can work from there.
