Updating an existing Splits Transaction (Q Mac)
When I initially split a transaction (as long as I don't mistype anything) it works fine. If I try to modify an existing split transaction it automatically creates an offsetting entry.
Example:
- Original Transaction: Gift Card: $400.00
- First Split: Dylan's Shed: -$263.81, River:Maintenance -$62.68 (these two amounts are correctly deducted from the $400.00 leaving a balance of -$73.51 on the Gift Card)
- Days later second split: Dylan's Shed -$8.93
- When I enter "Dylan's Shed -$8.93" Quicken enters another offsetting transaction automatically for $8.93 offsetting the -$8.93. If I try to delete the offsetting entry and try to save, Quicken requires I change the original amount ($408.93). The only way I've found to accomplish adding an additional split to an existing transaction is to delete the first split and start over.
This is easily reproducible. Attached are some screenshots.

If you have a $400 transaction with the following split:
Dylan's Shed -263.81
River:Maintenance -62.68
Unused Balance -73.51and you want to add a new split line for 8.93, then modify the unused balance line & reduce it by 8.93 and let Quicken add the new offsetting line which you can then categorize. If you don't want to do the math yourself you can press the little calculator symbol next to the Unused Balance number and use that to figure the new unused balance amount.
Several years ago they went through a couple iterations of modifying the way that splits get edited before arriving at the current implementation. I doubt they're going to want to open that can of worms again.

Thank you for your response. That worked. However I don't have a calculator icon next to the Unused Balance so I used my Mac calculator.

Jon, I see that now. This was very helpful. 😊 Thank you. You wouldn't happen to know why I got a $1 charge from Quicken on my Visa early this morning? This is the first time I've used this forum if that has anything to do with it.🤔

If your Quicken subscription is set to automatically renew and that renewal is coming up soon then they might be checking to see that the card still works. If so, I would expect the charge to drop off in a few days.
