Strange Behavior In Recording Transfers
iMac 24-Inch, 2024 macOS Tahoe Version 26.4.1 w/Quicken 9.0.1 (Build 900.60628.100)
On Split categories, transfers to 401k are disappearing.
Use case: To simplify,
- Deposit made to checking account (positive number - don't work for free)
- Split 1: Payroll amount (well above the deposit)
- Splits 2-6: Various tax deductions & premiums
- Split 7: Enter Category with entry like, "Transfer:[Name of Retirement Account]"
- Transfer field replicates the category above
On entry, sometimes the category disappears leaving the word, "Transfer" on its own. Naturally, the 401K retirement account does not see the plus up side of the transaction.
I can sometimes fix it by clearing all the splits, start with the Transfer Category to the 401K account, saving the transaction (wrong amount of course), and then editing the splits until all are properly adjusted. The entry is now correct.
If I then schedule that transaction to occur weekly, it seems to record properly but when I go in and inspect a future unrecorded transaction, the 401k account name is again missing in the category field leaving only the word, "Transfer".
Scheduling the transition weekly or monthly makes no difference.
I attempted to edit the future schedule (details) transaction split - very first one scheduled. I got the pinwheel of death. I had to force quit Quicken. Tried again to edit it. Same - pinwheel of death. Force Quit
This is a rather recent phenomena. I think it only started in 2026.
It's a bug. Is there a repair I can run?

The pinwheel of death problem is a known issue, you can work around that by going to the Bills & income tab and editing the scheduled transaction from there.
As for the transfer problem, in Quicken Settings on the Register tab do you have the "Allow creation of linked transfers using the category field" option checked?

A: You can work around that by going to the Bills & income tab …
R: This approach brings up the same form. After the edit is performed and Quicken reverts to the overall Detail tab, pressing OK yields the same result - Quicken hand up with the pinwheel.
Q: Do you have the "Allow creation of linked transfers using the category field" option checked?
A: Yes

Root cause found.
Conflicting payee rules. The check box was selected when the new records were created. There were multiple rules and some to the same payee. Deleted all rules for that payee. Rebuilt a transaction from scratch and unchecked the create the payee rules box. Transaction created perfectly. Then scheduled the transaction. Worked immediately. I'd say there is a bug in that Quicken got hung on that payee rule when many future transactions were created. Without the conflict, the schedule worked flawlessly.
