Installation issue: Failed to perform authenticated file move for Quicken.app

Installing Quicken Classic for Mac on a new MacAir M5 running Tahoe 26.4.1. When trying to install it fails with the following message: Failed to perform authenticated file move for Quicken.app.

Applications folder has permissions Read & Write for system and admin (me). Applications folder does not have any hidden files. Downloaded a fresh copy from quicken.com. Tried to install from Download folder and Applications folder.

The admin user was migrated from my old MacAir, and the quicken data files were restored from a backup.

I can install on a friend's MacBook with same OS (26.4.1), suspect that it is related to some configuration on the new computer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One thing to try would be to manually delete the old version from the Applications folder first, then try the install. Another thing to try would be to create a new (temporary) admin account on the Mac and download and install from there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried to install as a new admin user and a guest user, both got the same error as the original admin user. There had been no old version of Quicken in the Applications folder, only the datafile was backed up/restored. Thank you for helping me to narrow the issue further..

Can we assume you've restarted the computer? If so, try this:

n Finder, open your Applications folder.
Press Command + Shift + Period (.) to toggle visibility of hidden files.
If you see a folder named .background, move it to the Trash.
Press the same keyboard shortcut again to hide other system files.

Thank you! Yes I restarted the mac a few times. I checked in the Applications folder, but there doesn't seem to be any hidden file/directory with name .background.

I would suggest downloading the most recent version of Quicken from here:

https://www.quicken.com/support/reinstalling-and-patching-your-quicken-subscription-version-after-your-membership-has-0/

(You don't need to have an expired subscription to use these downloads, they will work for someone with an active sub as well.)

These aren't installers, they are the actual apps so you can just open the DMG and then drag & drop the app into your Applications folder. See if that works better for you than the installer.

Thank you for your suggestion. I did try a few times of downloading from quicken.com/download. It has been consistent behavior: *dmg opens up an Quicken installer icon, then I need to double click on the icon to install. I tried the following alternatives, but got the same result:

move the *dmg to the Applications folder and double click from there
move the *dmg to desk top and double click from there

Just to clarify. I also tried downloading the most recent versions listed in the link above. The downloaded file size is a lot larger than the *dmg files from quicken.com/support. However, the observation is the same. ie. it opened up an Quicken installer icon, after I followed through with the installation, it errored out with "Failed to perform authenticated file move for Quicken.app". I then tried to move the downloaded *dmg to Applications folder, it did not seem to make a difference. Interesting that despite the *dmg file size difference, the behaviors are the same.

You don’t move the dmg to the Applications folder. Download the dmg, double click on it to open it, then drag the Quicken app to the Applications folder. Don’t run it from the dmg, even though it’s telling you to do that.
