One Step Update issue - QFX File import [Edited]

Question

When new data is downloaded, it creates a "new" account that the data loads into - not the original account which is tied to One Step Update. Have to manually cut and paste the entries into the original account. Then, of course, it recognizes the entries, but tags them as "user entered" so they don't get tabulated when reconciling accounts. Is it possible to get the program to load the data into the OG account w/o creating a "new" account file?

I completely understand your concern about potentially losing information.

Deactivating an account only removes the online connection between Quicken and the financial institution; it does not delete the account itself or any of the transactions and historical data stored in your data file.

The goal of deactivating the account is to reconnect and relink the existing account that you want to continue using. During the reactivation process, selecting Link ensures that downloaded transactions continue flowing into the original account rather than creating a new duplicate account.

Quicken has been my primary bookkeeping source for more than 15 years. The changes that have been instituted in the last few years (both by Quicken & banks) have changed how data is handled. I am dealing with existing accounts that have years of history, so this is not a new file/account that is the challenge.

My question now is if I deactivate the affected accounts, will the existing data be compromised? Yes, there is a current backup available locally, but the chance of the existing data being corrupted is concerning. Also, will the deactivated accounts need to be re-activated when importing the data again, does that occur automatically when linking at File Import or will a totally new account need to be created? Sorry if these are basic questions, but the fear of losing years of data or having to start over from scratch makes me overly cautious.

Hi @R_K_602,

When importing a QFX file into Quicken for the first time, Quicken will prompt you to choose where you would like the transactions imported. At that point, you can either link the file to an existing account or create a new account. After the initial setup, future imports should automatically download into the same account.

To help ensure the import works properly going forward, we recommend deactivating any existing Web Connect or online-connected accounts associated with that financial institution before importing the QFX file again.

1. Deactivate the affected accounts

* Select the Tools menu and select Account List....
* In the Account List, select the account you want to deactivate, and then click Edit.
* In the Account Details window, click the Online Services tab.
* Click Deactivate next to the service you want to disable.
* Click Yes to the message confirming if you want to disable this service. 
* Repeat these steps for each affected account.
* Log in to your bank’s website and revoke Quicken’s third-party access (if applicable).

2. Steps to import QFX

* Back up your Quicken Data File.
* Go to the File menu and select File Import → Quicken Transfer Format (.QFX) File.

The Import .QFX File screen will appear.
* Use the Browse button to find and select the file you want to import.
* Click Open or double-click the file to import.
* When prompted, choose Link to an existing account and select the correct account from the dropdown menu. (Alternatively, choose Add a new account if you are importing data for a new credit card or bank account).

Once completed, future QFX imports should continue importing into the selected account automatically.
