How best to bulk rename payees in registers?

I'm cleaning up & merging memorized payees and renaming rules, but have LOTS of older transactions in my registers I'd like to retroactively apply the renaming rules. First I started by an "Itemized Payees" report to find large blocks of similar names… At the top of course Amazon. So, how best can I go back to rename these (and others) to "Amazon Marketplace"?

If you have multiple spelling variations, for example, for MacDonalds, Mac Donalds, McDonalds, McDonalds Store#1234, McDonalds Store #3456, etc. use Edit / Find/Replace to find and replace these Payee Name variations with one single "McDonald's" entry.
Does wonders on reports on itemized Payees (e.g., "How much did I spend on McDonald's"?)

Of course, Renaming Rules should be used to ensure new transactions are created using a "clean" Payee Name. Otherwise, in a few months, you'll be back to the same messy registers …

Note: Before you start making changes which affect many transactions, do be sure to create a backup of your data file. A bad change may really cause a headache.

This helps alot. I've already cleaned up payees on over 1000 old transactions, and I'm only on the "B's". Another question though: Is there a way to "Find" a more complex expression such as "contains 'Brookshires', but does not contain 'Fuel'"?

I'm basically trying to accomplish this (assuming these renaming rules work as I expect):

Does one really need a Renaming Rule if the payee name itself already downloads "cleanly"?
Without these two rules, what downloads in reality?

Not per se. "Brookshires" is an east Texas Grocery chain, with fuel stations. They usually have the name of the town in each transaction, which I don't really care much about. When purchasing fuel from their stations, they download as "Brookshire's Fuel #nnn sometown". I want to detect "Brookshire's Fuel" so that it auto-categorizes as "Auto:Fuel", otherwise any "Brookshires" (no "fuel") I want to default categorize as "Groceries".
