I have quicken deluxe.
Is there a way to select to filter by categories, by date.
When i tried, it sorted by categories and the transactions were listed oldest to newest in the register, When I then selected date, i lost the category filter.

Yes, that is correct. In the account register, Quicken can only sort by one column at a time.
If your goal is to view transactions for specific categories within a particular date range, using Search/Find, Register Filters, or running a report would be the better approach. Sorting alone cannot apply both Category and Date as simultaneous sorting criteria.

Have you tried working with the Itemized Categories Report (from the Reports and Graphs Center or the Reports / Spending Menu)? Once the report displays the Categories summary, click on the blue text link "Update to show" and select "Transaction Detail"
My favorite way to get a quick sum of the spending in a category by date is to use the search and filters in the All Transactions register. You can navigate to the All Transactions register using the link at the top of the Accounts Bar. Once in the All Transaction register, use the date filters to set your preferred date range and the search to enter text that matches the desired category name(s). The relevant transactions will be displayed with a balance showing the sum of the relevant transactions.
