TL:DR
Does Quicken rely specifically on any part(s) of MS Edge?
Background if you care to read on.
First, My PC is Win11 25H2 with current patches/updates. However, I do not use MS Edge for anything except some testing. I use Brave as my primary browser, and Firefox to connect to older websites and some internal network resources.
I posted in another thread about the .28 update "breaking" OSU. Lot's of folks reported the same. When I tried to reset my accounts, the "Add Account" screen was blank. This is the screen that tells you to login to your FI's website, etc. No matter how long I left the dialog up, it never displayed the dialog text and the continue button. I restarted my PC and Quicken several times until I declared myself insane. So I created a new Qdata file, tried to add a new account, got the list of FIs, picked one and got the same blank screen.
So I though, perhaps, something with the .28 update went wrong so I uninstalled it, along with the "hidden folders". Reinstalled Q, when I launched it, I saw the UI pop up briefly and then the screen went blank. I could only see the menu items File and Help. Since this was a fresh install, I expected to login to my Quicken account, but the dialog never appears. I know this is presenting essentially a web page within Quicken so it uses the "built-in" browser. I've seen issues before about clearing default browser caches when quirks like this appear but I had been clearing all browser caches, even made FF my default browser, still no joy.
So I fired up a clean Win1125H2 virtual machine (VM) that never had Quicken on it. Installed Quicken and launched. Quicken loaded, took me through the "wizard" and presented the login screen. I logged in OK and opened a copy of my Qdata file. Didn't try OSU but everything else worked.
So what's different from my 25H2 VM vs my 25H2 real machine (RM) I ask myself. Back on my RM, I tried to make MS Edge the default (hadn't tried it before). This time, Edge simply wouldn't open. I checked my APPS and it said MS Edge was still there but just won't do anything. So this takes me down a rabbit hole of trying to "repair" Edge. Instead of repairing Edge (or my Windows install) I restored a recent backup of my PC. All my "work product" is stored on a cloud system or my local NAS so I'm not concerned about any data loss.
Once the restore is done, I test MS Edge. It works as advertised. I fire up Quicken (which is now the .28 update) and now I get the login box. Sign into my Quicken Account, get my qdata file open, run OSU and everything connects, all accounts with recent transactions download. So everything seems back to normal.
So this leads me to the question, does Quicken Windows rely specifically on any parts of MS Edge, instead of the assigned default browser? I realized Brave is not directly supported but Firefox is. Bear in mind that prior FI resets, logins to my Quicken Account and other web related activities always worked with Brave as my default. I can't say for sure what happened to MS Edge or when it happened, but restoring my backup seemed to fix everything. Of course, this could be merely coincidence (correlation does not imply causation) which leads me to my question.
