Why are payments being added, not deducted, in Quicken Classic Basic CAD?

I'm using Quicken Classic Basic Canada/Version R67.8/Build 27.1.67.8 on my Windows desktop.

It took me a while to realize that the reason my Chequing account is not balancing is because Quicken is adding any payments rather than deducting them.  Deposits are being subtracted.  I'm in a real mess.  Is there something I can do to fix this?  Any help is appreciated.

I'm downloading from BMO (Bank of Montreal) through Quicken (is this web connect?).  I do each account separately, as I've learned from experience that if I select all of them to do it in one go, Quicken puts the transactions into the wrong accounts.

Are you downloading transactions into this Quicken account? If so, from which financial institution and using which download method: Web Connect (from the FI's website) or Express Web Connect (using One Step Update)?
