Accounts Linked Incorrectly

I didn't realize this issue until today. I already had a savings account linked, and it's been like this for several years; however, in November of last year I added a checking account, but when I linked that account into Quicken it took over the savings account, and now the savings account that was on Quicken first is now the checking account. I deactivated the checking account first; it still did the same thing. Second attempt, I deactivated both; still the same thing. What is going on here now, and how can I fix this madness?

Thank you for reaching out, and I'm sorry to hear about the trouble.

Based on your description, it sounds like the checking account may have been linked to the existing savings register instead of its own register, which can happen if the wrong register is selected during account linking.

Before making any additional changes, I'd recommend creating a backup of your Quicken file (File > Copy or Backup File) so you have a restore point if needed.

Then, try the following:

1. Deactivate online services for both the checking and savings accounts. You can find the steps in this support article:

2. Clear the financial institution and account number information from both accounts:

• Go to Tools > Account List.
• Select the account and click Edit.
• Open the Online Services tab. If you see Set Up Now, the account has been successfully deactivated.
• Go to the General tab and clear the Financial Institution and Account Number fields.
• Click OK to save your changes.

3. Verify which register should be your savings account and which should be your checking account. If the checking transactions were downloaded into the savings register beginning in November, move those transactions into the correct checking register:

• Open the account register where you are moving the transactions from.
• Highlight all transactions (click the first, hold Shift, click the last).
• Right-click and select Move transactions.

• Choose the account and click OK.

4. Once the registers contain the correct transactions, reactivate the accounts and, during setup, be sure to choose Link to Existing Account and carefully link each financial institution account to the correct Quicken register.
