Help, My Quicken data has been changed due to "OneDrive" thread being deleted.

Question

My Quicken files were balanced through April 2026. Then I started getting error messages concerning "OneDrive" in the file name. I followed instructions on how to change back up to the hard drive. I'm thinking there was also a Quicken update around the same time I did this. The error message did disappear. However, now my Quicken Data is all out of balance going back YEARS! I have been a Quicken user for many, many years. My most recent USB backup is from January 2026. Can I override existing data on my Quicken program and replace it with my backup USB files?  I'm getting a message telling me that if I do, I will not be able to recover previous files. Is this ok?

As a default, Quicken saves 5 backup files, one for every 5 sessions, in a Backup subfolder on your computer in the same folder as your Quicken data file. It may still be in the old location. If you did not manually change that you should be able to find them and restore if necessary.

Next, it may be that your balances are off because Quicken changed the Opening Balance on the accounts during a cloud sync. Check for that.

Lastly, ignore the OneDrive warning. In your case and many others, moving the data file causes more trouble than OneDrive ever could have. I have yet to see a single confirmed case of OneDrive causing a datafile issue in the past year. The problems associated with how OneDrive interacts with Quicken were solved long before Quicken got around to posting a warning about an issue that has long since passed. But I have seen many users get confused trying to follow the outdated guidance and lose access to what was a perfectly good data file.

No because I did get that far and I was hoping to just restore the original. I saw those same instructions which is what prompted my question. like I previously stated, I do have a Back-up file on a USB drive which was saved at the start of current year. I was going to upload that, but I guess I should just do as a copy?

I'm sorry to hear you're running into this issue.

The good news is that you don't have to overwrite your current data file when restoring a backup. Instead, you can restore the backup as a separate copy, allowing you to keep both your current file and the restored version until you're confident everything looks correct.

Here's how to restore a backup without overwriting your existing file:

* Go to File > View/Restore Backups....

* Browse the Local and Online Backups tabs to find the backup file you want to restore. The Quicken backup file has the extension .QDF-Backup.
* Select the file to restore and click Restore Backup.
* Next, you will have the option to overwrite the open file or create a copy of the backup you're restoring* If you Create a copy, you will need to select a location to save the copy to and you will also need to give the copy a unique file name. After naming the file and selecting the location, click Save, then click Yes to open the restored file.

This will preserve your current data file while allowing you to review and work with the restored copy.
