Trying to delete a duplicated line item in my investment account

I recently had to restore my data file due to an operational issue that damaged the file. The restore went fine and then I ran an update to restore the data to the current date. All seemed to be well at first. After a few weeks I noticed that the displayed total for my investment account was higher than the actual account balance.

After some serious analysis, I found that somehow during the update process I had created a duplicate listing of one of my stocks. I can see the duplicated line in the holdings screen, but when I tried to delete this duplicate it would not let me. The error message says that I could not delete it because it had been used in one or more transactions.

I can edit or make some changes to this line item, but nothing I have tried will let me delete the line item.

What can I do?

Thank you for sharing the details of what you’re experiencing. You can check the transactions associated with the duplicate security in the Security Detail view. Before making any changes, please be sure to save a backup of your data file.

To review the transactions:

• Go to Holdings in the affected account.

• The security names will appear in blue. Click the name of the duplicated security.

• The transaction history will appear in the panel on the right. These are the transactions associated with that security.

• You cannot delete the transactions directly from this view. Instead, locate them in the account register and delete them there.
• You can also sort the register by Security by clicking the column heading. This may make it easier to locate and delete the transactions associated with the duplicated security.

• Once there are no remaining transactions associated with the duplicated security, you can delete it from the Security List.
