Quicken Not Opening .QFX file on Windows 11 Laptop

I previously ran Quicken Classic on an older laptop running Windows 10 and never had issues with Quicken automatically opening downloaded .qfx files. I recently bought a new laptop running Windows 11 and installed Quicken Classic from my subscription. Now running on Windows 11, Quicken will no longer automatically open downloaded .qfx files.

I verified the that Quicken was the default app for .qfx files and if I double-click on a downloaded .qfx file, it will open in Quicken. But I want the software to do it automatically, not have to do extra steps to open the file!

I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicken as was suggested in another post with no change. This issue happens no matter which financial institution I download from (Chase, Citibank, AMEX, credit union). Again, the the .qfx files can be opened manually.

Very frustrating to have this working for many years and now it does not work running on Windows 11.

You don't indicate what browser you are using, but that can make a difference in how the QFX file works. Another thing to consider is checking the download settings in your browser. Since it's a new computer, there may be some default settings that need to be changed.

I'm using the FireFox browser that I used both with Windows 10 & 11. As I mentioned in the original post, I verified the that Quicken was the default app for .qfx files.

@tdohe2 Double-check some of the download settings in the Firefox browser. These are not the same as the file associations in Windows 11. I know that there are download options in MS Edge that cause downloaded files to behave differently. There might be some corresponding download settings or options for Firefox.

Fix Firefox’s handling of QFX files

Firefox often defaults to “Save File” instead of “Open with Quicken,” which prevents automatic import.

Steps:

In Firefox, open Settings.
Scroll to General → Applications.
In the search box, type QFX.
Change the action from Save File to Open with Quicken.
- If Quicken does not appear, browse to:C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken\qw.exe

After this change, Firefox will automatically launch Quicken when a QFX file finishes downloading.

I played with this a bit. When I tried to go to Firefox Settings, there was no General option. I am using the most recent Firefox on Windows 11. I do have an older version of Firefox on an old Windows 10 machine, and it does have Settings→General.

This seemed to work:

1, Open Firefox settings

2. Select Downloads. (There is a Search text entry box there, but entering QFX doesn't do anything.)

3. At the bottom of the Downloads page, check the "Ask to open or save files" item in the "What should Firefox do with other files?" question

4. Download a QFX file, and you will get a pop-up asking you what to do. Check "Open with…" and make sure that Quicken is the app.

5. Check "Do this automatically for files like this from now on."

6. Click OK

That should do it. You may want to go back to Settings→Download and change the answer to "What should Firefox do with other files?"
