Problem setting up second Capital One venture credit card account

I have one current Quicken Capital One Venture credit card account. I am WAY behind on "accepting" transactions, and it no longer downloads new transactions. I eventually plan to address that! But for now, I want to set up a fresh Quicken account for the SAME credit card that will accept my new transactions (say, starting 3 months ago, or whatever), without affecting my current Quicken Capital One Venture credit card account. That way I can at least stay up to date on my current purchases and slowly accept the old ones. I can't figure out how to do this.

Thank you for sharing your question. I just want to make sure I understand what you mean by “accepting” transactions. Are you referring to transactions that have already downloaded into Quicken but are still sitting at the bottom of the account register, waiting to be compared and accepted?

If so, and you’d like to create a second account for the same credit card without accepting those transactions yet, there is an important limitation to be aware of: you won’t be able to disconnect the original account while there are downloaded transactions waiting to be accepted.

In this case, you may need to create a new Quicken file and add the credit card account there. This will help avoid any conflicts with the existing connection.

Create a new Quicken file

Choose File menu > New Quicken File.
Select New Quicken File.
Click OK.
In the File name field, enter the name of the new file then click Save (Don't use any of these characters: * ? < > | " : \ / (asterisk, question mark, left and right angle bracket, pipe, straight quotation marks, colon, BACKSLASH, FORWARD SLASH). Also, don't add the .qdf extension; Quicken does that for you).
Sign in with your Quicken ID. If you are prompted to create a Quicken ID but already have one, click Sign In under the Create Account prompt.
Select if you want to use Mobile.
Click Add Account to start adding accounts to the new file.

If I’ve misunderstood what you mean by “accepting” transactions, please let me know what you’re seeing in the account register, and I’ll be happy to clarify.

I hadn't thought of opening a new file. That was just what I wanted to know. Will I be able to eventually move the "new" credit card account to my "old" Quicken file, and then merge it into my "old" Quicken credit card account?

(BTW, I LOVE the fact that Amazon purchases are now broken out, though I haven't tried using that yet. That is why I got so far behind in reconciling my "old" credit card account!)

Yes, you can eventually move your transactions from the new file to the original file using a QIF file. The following articles provide instructions on how to export your financial data to a QIF file and then import it into another Quicken file:

Is it possible for me to copy over all the categories from my existing Quicken file to my new Quicken file? Since I want to merge the two files (ultimately), I would like the categories to be identical. Thank you.

Quicken doesn't have a built-in tool to export/import categories, but you may be able to do it with the QIF file export/import. Please follow the steps below to try to export transactions (make sure to back up your files first):

Open the main file.
Choose File menu > File Export > QIF file.
- Enter a name for the export file at the end of the existing path (make sure there is a backslash \ before the file name). Quicken automatically adds the correct file extension.
- Click Browse to select a different location. Enter a name in the File name field, and then click OK to return to the QIF Export screen.

In the Quicken Account to Export from dropdown, select the account containing the transactions you want to export.
Enter the date range that includes the transactions containing the categories you want to export.
Under Include in export, select Transactions and Category list.
Click OK to complete the export.

Import the QIF file into the new file

Open the Quicken file where you want to transfer the categories. If you recently opened the file, you can find it under File in the list of recent files. You can also create a new file by going to File > New Quicken File.
Create an offline account:
- Go to Tools > Add Account.
- At the bottom of the window, select Offline Account.
- Select the same account type as the account you exported from.
Once the offline account has been created, go to File > QIF File.
In the QIF Import window, select the newly created offline account from the dropdown menu.
Browse to and select the QIF file you exported.
Select the items you want to import, such as Transactions and Category list. These should match the items you selected during the export.
Click Import.
Review the imported information to make sure the transactions and categories were transferred correctly.

Once you confirm the categories imported successfully, you can delete the offline account. The imported categories should remain in your Quicken file.

If these steps feel too complicated, you can recreate the categories manually in the new file.
