how do i merge 2 credit card accounts in quicken classic

Somewhere along the line, Capital One started downloading new transactions into a newly named credit card account with the same account number. I do not believe I did this. But I also didn't think they could do this either! I now have two accounts for the same credit card; one with transactions from the beginning of 2026 going back many years and this new account starting mid year with a name I would never give it . At any rate, I want to merge them.

Can someone help me with this or point to the location in a Quicken help page? I'm running Quicken Classic on Windows 11. Thank You!

@GTClover I am assuming that "Venture XX4537" is the "new" credit card that was created and is currently connected to Quicken for downloads, and the "Credit Card at Capital Once Card Service" isn't currently connected with a balance as of the beginning of 2026.

1. Make a backup of your data file before you start this process.
2. Run a transaction or register report for both accounts. If possible, export them to Excel.
3. Make note of Ending Balance in the "Venture" account.
4. Disconnect the "Venture" account by going onto the Online Services tab in Account Details and clicking on "Deactivate".
5. Then, on the General tab, blank out Financial Institution Name and Account Number.
6. In the "Capital One" account, make sure the account is disconnected, and the Financial Institution Name and Account Number are blanked out.
7. Verify that the ending balance in the "Capital One" account matches the opening balance in the "Venture" account. If not try to find the date and the balance in the Venture account that matches the date and ending balance in the "Capital Once" account. Delete any duplicate transactions in the"Venture" account. You shoud be able to end up with no overlap or duplicate transactions in either account. The "Capital One" account should have a complete transaction history through the cutover date. The "Venture" account should have complete transactions from the cutover date to current, This is a critical step to ensure we can reconcile once we combine the two accounts.
8. In the "Venture" account, delete the Opening Balance transaction. This transaction will not need to merge or move to the "Capital One" account.
9. In the "Venture" account, use the "Move" command to move all of the transactions to the "Capital One" account.
   1. In the "Venture" account, highlight the transactions to move to the "Capital One" account. If you have a lot of transactions to move, it might be easier to move the transactions in groups. To highlight the transactions, click on the first one, then hold down the Shift key, and move down to the last one and click on it. All the transactions between the first one and the last one should be highlighted.
   2. Right click on the highlighted transactions and then select "Move transaction(s)".
   3. In the pop-up box, select the "Capital One" account and then hit "OK".
   4. Moving the transactions from the "Venture" account to the "Capital One" account might take some time. Be patient and do not interrupt the process.
   5. Very Important - you will need to monitor the process and if you get any pop-up boxes, make sure to always answer "YES" or "OK".
   6. After you have moved all transactions from the "Venture" to "Capital One" account, the "Venture" account should be empty.
10. Check the Ending Balance in the "Capital One" account. It should match what was the Ending Balance in the Venture Account. If not, use the reports you ran in step #2 to help you reconcile and determine if there are any missing or duplicate transactions.
11. Reactivate the "Capital One" account.
12. The "Venture" account should be deleted after the "Capital One account has been reconciled and successfully connected with online services. In Account Details, click on "Delete Account" on the bottom left of the window. Follow the prompts to confirm deletion.
