Sudden Check Register Changes [Edited]

Question

Out of the blue, my check register has switched my withdrawals and deposits, ie., my deposits are now in the negative, and my payments out are now in the negative.  This happened overnight and includes everything on the check register.  How do I get them back to their correct determinations?

@1desparatewoman! every time I've seen this issue, it has been caused by a bad field in the data sent by the financial institution. What happens is that the downloaded data contains a field that causes Quicken to flip the account from a deposit account to a credit account or vice versa. Did this happen immediately after downloading transactions? If so, from which financial institution? What download method did you use? Express Web Connect (i.e. One Step Update) or Web Connect?

Also, try this test.. Open a brand new Quicken file (not just a new account, an entire new file - as a test). Set up the transaction download for the affected account. Download your transactions. Did the transactions download with the correct or incorrect sign?

Thank you for coming to the Community and reporting the issues you have run into.

I have some follow-up questions for you:

* Where is your data file located?* Here is a Support Article on locating your file, if needed.

* Is your file being backed up/synced by any third-party apps or services like OneDrive, Dropbox, or Carbonite?
* Did you notice any other strange behavior in the file before this happened?* If so, what was it?

* Were there any significant changes to your system before this issue occurred?* Like Quicken updates, Windows updates, etc.

Since this issue just happened, I think the best course of action is to Restore a Backup from before it began. Before doing that, make sure to Save a Backup of your current file. Then follow the steps below:

Restore Quicken data

* Go to File > View/Restore Backups....
* Browse the Local and Online Backups tabs to find the backup file you want to restore. The Quicken backup file has the extension .QDF-Backup.
* Select the file to restore and click Restore Backup.
* Next, you will be given the option to overwrite the file you have open or to create a copy of the backup you're restoring.* If you Create a copy, you will need to select a location to save the copy to and you will also need to give the copy a unique file name. After naming the file and selecting the location, click Save, then click Yes to open the restored file.
* What does it mean to overwrite a file?: Restoring a backup file replaces your current data with the data stored on the backup. Be aware that you'll lose any changes you made since the backup was created. If you want to preserve the current file, you must rename the current file or the file you are restoring. We recommend avoiding overwriting files.

More information is available in the articles linked above in blue. Once you have successfully restored a backup, let us know if your withdrawals and deposits are still reversed.
