Quicken shuts down on startup

Been having this problem for a couple of months. When opening quicken, it immediately shuts down and shows Quicken Unexpectedly Quit Last Time It Was Run. This was and still is happening every time if I close the program by clicking the X in the upper right corner. Restarting the program usually worked normally but occasionally displayed the same error. After months of irritation, I tried shutting down using File/Exit. That seems to work most of the time. The error has displayed only one time using that method. I am a long time user of Quicken and have never had this issue until recently. Have always used X to close the program.

Also still having the issue of most graphs just briefly flashing values. The only exception is the Net Worth graph.

The combination of Quicken unexpectedly closing when exiting and graphs not displaying properly makes me wonder if there may be some underlying data file corruption. As a first step, I'd recommend running Validate and Repair. If the problems persist after validation, I would also suggest creating a Quicken Copy of the data file. A Copy rebuilds many internal database tables and indexes and has been known to resolve issues that Validate alone does not correct.

Validate and Repair

Select File → Validate and Repair File.
Select Validate File.
Click OK.
When the process completes, review the DATA_LOG.TXT for any reported errors or repairs.
Test whether Quicken still unexpectedly closes when exiting and whether the graphs display correctly.

Create a Quicken Copy

Important: The copied file will require you to reactivate online services for accounts that use transaction downloads.

Create a current backup (File → Copy or Backup File → Create a Complete Backup).
Select File > Copy or Backup File.
Choose Create a Copy or Template.
Select Copy and accept the default date range (all transactions).
Save the copied file with a new name.
Open the new copied file.
Review your accounts, balances, reports, and graphs.
If the copied file resolves the issue, continue using the new file and reconnect online services as needed.

Given that you've been experiencing both unexpected shutdowns and graph display issues for an extended period, I think a Validate followed by a Quicken Copy would be a worthwhile troubleshooting path if you haven't already tried it.

I did all of that including uninstall and reinstall of Quicken and current update. Still have the same issue of flashing values and the first time I opened the Copy file it also crashed. I am not the only one who has the problem of flashing values in the graphs. Went through several weeks of starting a discussion on that issue, receiving comments, trying the suggestions and leaving more replies. None of it worked and then I began having the startup issues. Now I just expect the program to not work as it is supposed to do. If one graph (Net Worth) works correctly then all graphs should display the values. What is the difference. Your software engineers need to figure it out and stop wasting my time.

I can certainly understand your frustration. It sounds like you've already invested a significant amount of time trying the recommended troubleshooting steps, including uninstalling and reinstalling Quicken, updating to the current release, testing with a copy of the data file, and working through suggestions provided in the earlier discussion.

Just to clarify, I'm another Quicken user participating in the community forum, not a Quicken employee or member of the Quicken development team. Because of that, I don't have visibility into the underlying cause of the issue or the ability to escalate it directly to the software engineers.

Given that the problem persists after the troubleshooting you've already performed, and especially since you're also experiencing crashes when opening a copy of the file, I think the next step would be to contact Quicken Support. They have access to diagnostic tools and escalation channels that aren't available to forum users and may be able to determine whether this is a file-specific issue, a program issue, or a known problem that requires further investigation.

Thanks for trying. I would think the Quicken engineers might monitor these discussions for issues that might arise and try to stay ahead of any problems. T

I understand why you would expect that. This forum is primarily a user-to-user community where Quicken users, Moderators, and occasionally Quicken representatives help troubleshoot issues and share information.

While issues discussed here may be brought to Quicken's attention, there is no guarantee that a particular discussion thread is being reviewed by the development team. That is one reason why I suggested contacting Quicken Support directly. Support can document the issue, gather diagnostic information, determine whether it is a known problem, and, when appropriate, escalate the matter through Quicken's internal channels.

As a fellow Quicken user, I don't have any direct way to report issues to Quicken's engineers or determine whether a particular problem is already being investigated. Given the troubleshooting you've already completed and the fact that the issue persists, I still think Quicken Support would be in the best position to assist further.
