New to Quicken Mac

I'm a Quicken Windows convert. I'm loving the Mac version, but I have a question. I have two MacBook laptops. One serves as a desktop while the second is for travel. What is the wisdom of using a data file stored in iCloud for both laptops? Any pointers?

Not a good idea, it can lead to file corruption. If you want to use Quicken on two Macs you have to move the file back & forth between the two machines. You can do that via iCloud if you zip the file first.

Another option is keep the live file on the "desktop" mac and remote into it using Apple's built-in Screen Sharing app, TeamViewer or any other means of remote access. That way, the file itself is only stored on one computer and not in the cloud, which as Jon says is a really bad idea. You can find instructions by searching "apple screen sharing".

One thing to note is that it is safe to store Quicken BACKUP files in the cloud, just not the main file.

Ao, nother approach, which works best if you are the sole user, is to designate Quicken to back up to a cloud folder. Then each time you want to use Quicken, you can restore the from the backup file on the cloud to your current computer. Just make sure to quit Quicken each time so the backup is refreshed, and that the backup is synced to the cloud, before trying to use it again on the next computer.
