I see this happened to someone else in July, but the discussion was closed.
@Randy 415 was Check Pay used for both payments? I had this happen to me and it turned out that the other check number was from another source.
Yes, Check Pay was used for both payments. I've never had this happen before, but I do not use Check Pay much as it does not work well. The other payment was in February 2026. If I click "Cancel", the payment is not made, and I have to start all over, and the same thing happens. If I click "OK", then a duplicate check number payment is entered. I then enter another payment, and the check number is incremented. I then cancel the first payment with the incorrect check number. Keep in mind, I do not have any control over the check number, so I cannot increment it, or even specify which check number to use.
I see that someone in July had the same issue that was never resolved. They did the same workaround that I did. Add a second payment, get an incremented check number, cancel the first payment.
@Randy 415 that is indeed odd, but I would have just used the duplicate check number. In my opinion, unless the duplicate numbers are causing a functional problem, such as transactions being matched incorrectly, reconciliation issues, or difficulty identifying payments, this may be more of a cosmetic issue than an actual accounting problem.
