Automatic Payee Recognition Not Working — Bank of America

Question

I'm using Quicken Windows R69.53. Since September 2026, Quicken has stopped automatically cleaning up merchant names on my Bank of America Visa downloads.

Existing renaming rules still work, but unfamiliar merchants retain their raw downloaded names (e.g., "Publix #1639" instead of "Publix"). My other non-BofA credit cards continue downloading normally.

All automatic renaming settings are enabled, and there are no Do-Not-Rename rules. Everything worked correctly through August 2026, long after BofA switched to Express Web Connect+.

Is this a known issue? What changed, and is there a fix?

I don't want to spend an hour manually renaming transactions every month. If this can't be resolved, I'll stop using my Bank of America card.

Thank you for the follow-up information.

Since the renaming rules work in a test file, I would recommend completing the validate and repair step I mentioned. This feature is there to help repair files, not hurt files. To be safe, you can save a backup before completing the step. Steps to save a backup can be found in this Support Article.

Once the backup is created, please follow the following steps to validate and repair your file.

* Here are the steps to validate your file. Start at step 5. The steps are also listed below.* From the menu bar, choose File > Validate and Repair File...
* In the Validate and Repair window, confirm the correct file is selected.
* Select the Validate file option.
* Leave all other boxes unchecked (do not select “Rebuild investing lots” or “Copy file”).
* Click OK to begin the validation.
* After the process completes, Quicken opens a log file named DATA_LOG.TXT.

* Does the account rename the transactions now when downloading?

If validating your data file does not resolve the issue, I recommend trying to disconnect the account and then reconnect it as a new account.

When you reach the Reactivate Accounts section, please skip Step 4 and select Add to Quicken instead.

Answers to Quicken James

* Where is your Quicken data file located? Local hard drive. 
* When the issue started, did you have to relink your account in Quicken? No
* Was there a computer update that happened at that time? Maybe
* Was it in September when you updated to R69.53? It worked in August and didn't work the next time I tried in October.
* Do you have other Bank of America accounts connected? No
* Have you tried to validate and repair your file? I'm afraid to do this.

Per Sceptic's advice, I created a test file and downloaded my BofA there and the merchant clean up worked in the test file. It's strange that merchant clean up works with all my other credit cards in my current file. Maybe there is something with a setting and the WebConnect in my current file. I do not use WebConnect with my other credit cards.
