There are a number of situations where moving transactions from one account to another account within your Quicken file may be handy.

For example, if you have had an issue that resulted in transactions being downloaded to the wrong account or you are using an interim account like a cash account to import transactions.

How do you get the transactions from one account to another account in the same Quicken file?

The process outlined in this FAQ applies to moving transactions between non-investment accounts in the same Quicken Windows file. The process for moving transactions between investment accounts within the same Quicken Windows file and the process for moving transactions between accounts in QE for Mac are covered elsewhere.

When doing any major data changes or trying an unfamiliar process, always create a backup before starting so you can revert to the backup should anything not go as expected.

The basic process for moving transactions between non-investment accounts is to select the transactions you wish to move, right click in the selected area, and choose  Copy Transaction(s) and right click/Paste Transaction(s) in the destination account, then go back to the source account and delete the transactions you copied.

To select the transactions you wish to "move", use standard Windows multi select techniques:
    • To select a continguous range of transactions, click the first transaction in the range of transactions you wish to move, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard, then click the last transaction in the range you wish to move. The range of transactions selected should be highlighted.
    • To select non-contiguous transactions, click the first transaction you wish to move, hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, then continue clicking each transaction you wish to move while continuing to hold down the CTRL key until you have selected all the transactions you wish to move.
You may find it helpful to sort and/or filter the register to group the transactions you wish to move together.

    Notes:

If you instead selected Cut or Move Transaction(s) and the transactions you selected contain Reconciled transactions or online payment transactions, you will see a prompt for each Reconciled transaction and online payment transaction asking you to confirm the move. If you select the Copy Transaction(s) option, you will not see these prompts.

You should be aware that combining transactions from two account registers may result in duplicated transactions. Careful selection of the transactions to move along with review and correction of the account register post transaction move is needed.

Special care should be taken with the opening balance transaction in the account register you are moving transactions from (the source account). Moving the opening balance transaction from the source account to the target account register could cause the target account's balance to be incorrect.
