I have quicken 2016 premier.  one of my investment accounts reports double the number of shares I actually have.  I have to enter a placeholder entry to remove half the shares so the number of shares in quicken matches the actual number of share I have.  how do I solve this problem?

Is this double the number of one security? Run a security report and see where the extra shares show up. Then modify that transaction.

the doubling happens to all the securities in the account.

How long have you noticed this? How far back is your last "undoubled" backup? Have you tried validating?

the problem has been going on at least 1 year.  how do you validate?

File ---->File Operations ------>Validate and Repair.

But if this has been going on at least a year you may have other problems. You can start a new account, transfer the correct shares to it, and then just hide the old account. Make sure the two accounts have different names or downloading will be compromised. You may have to manually adjust for the basis.
