Why is my data file more than twice the size of my automatic backup files (as viewed in Finder)?

Per Finder, my data file (the package) is ~86MB, and my automatic backup files are all ~36MB. I can think of some reasons for this, but they'd be speculative, and I'd feel better if someone in the know answered.
