"Payment failed" and wrong scheduled date on email
I scheduled a payment to American Express, weeks ago, for yesterday, August 12, the payment due date. This is something I have done every month for years.
Of course, I assumed that the payment was made as it should be.
Today I get an email from Quicken that the payment could not be completed because "the American Express website is experiencing an outage." I immediately went to the AmEx website and made the payment manually, but I was assessed a late fee because now the payment is late.
So that's issue one: if there is some kind of problem, Quicken should notify me on the date of the failed payment so that I have an opportunity to fix the problem and make the payment. I happened to log onto the American Express website twice yesterday, so I know that it was not down, at least not at either of the times I used it.
Secondly, the email I received erroneously shows today, August 13, as the "Scheduled date." That's just plain wrong, the scheduled date was yesterday (as confirmed in my Quicken register.) But now the email makes it look as if I scheduled my payment for a date after the due date, which is wrong. But it makes me look like a liar, which I resent.
Quicken Bill Pay is such a far cry from the service it used to be back in the Metavante days… that system never let me down and worked for all payees. Today's Quicken Bill Pay doesn't even work to pay most of my bills (Chase, anyone?) and is apparently unreliable too. If I have to go and make payments manually for every one of my creditors – and apparently I do – then why am I using Quicken?

Looking at my own AmEx accounts, it appears to me that AmEx has made a change and is not "playing ball" with Quick Pay any longer.
To avoid future late payments, may I recommend that you automate the process of making payments, as follows. From now on let AmEx's computer system do all the work for you. Logon to the AmEx website once and set up their Autopay, APS, Direct debit, etc. service to make the current payment and all future payments automatically on or before Due date directly from your checking account.
In parallel to that, in Quicken, every month, record a regular Scheduled Reminder to keep track of your payments before they come due.0
