Persist/Allow Modification/Allow Sorting By Security Category

Right now, in the Security Detail View, specifically the "Security Details" box under the "My Holdings" box, we are given the name, symbol, type, category, and asset class information for the security.

The category information is only populated through downloading asset class information. It will persist for a time after you turn off downloads for the security, but once you validate your file, that information disappears and gets replaced by "N/A".

I'd like an option to persist this category even when downloads for the security are turned off as it provides some helpful information about the security, and potentially even manually fill in the category. I'd also like to be able to be able to sort by category in portfolio view. This is particularly helpful when you keep a watch list of securities you may buy in the future.

Minor clarification: what you are terming category is sometimes presented as Industry/Category

Currently, you should be able to add that column to any portfolio view (customize) and then sort based on that column. See the canned ‘Fundamentals’ view for an example.

If you have the security on your Watch list, I’d expect you to be downloading quotes and not have a persistence issue. Am I missing something?

The request to maintain the field and allow more user control seems very reasonable. I am a bit mixed on whether the field should be fully editable or just selectable from a prescribed list.

I’ll also not that Security Details is a touch flaky. Whether the Industry appears seems to depend on the Security Type. I have a variety of personalized security types and Industry does not get listed there, even though the portfolio views show the industry

    Thanks for posting the idea.

I am talking about category, which is usually specific to ETFs/Mutual Funds. Buy you are right, Industry tends to be for individual stocks. Either way, it would be nice to be able to find information about the security, and override any information we want.
