Stock Splits - Again

I've read the older posts on stock splits and am still confused.

Situation:

  1. Brokerage today downloaded a 2 for 1 stock split transaction for HDB (an Indian bank) which became effective today.
  2. Price before split was around $70. Quicken adjusted stock price history back to Sept 1 to about $35.
  3. Today, despite quote in Quicken being correct at about $35, my portfolio dashboard shows a gain of about 100% for HDB.
  4. I went into the downloaded stock split transaction and entered today's opening price (again about $35) into the Price After Split field. Didn't make a difference.
  5. In the graph of this security I am able to toggle on and off the with split box and the graph shows correctly.

Question:

  1. Will this iron itself out tomorrow or in next few days?
  2. Why is Quicken showing an about 100% gain today even when historic data since September 1 was adjusted?
  3. I assume I should just leave well enough alone correct?

The problem is that the Quicken quote provider goes back about 5 days and adjusts the quotes for the split. However, it shouldn't do this. Since you got the shares today, today should be the first day with the new lower price, not the previous days that were adjusted. Every time I get a stock split I go back and put the original prices back in for what was adjusted. This will correct your daily gain/loss for the security. However, unless this issue has been fixed recently, the total daily gain/loss for the account will still be wrong (at least it has always been that way for my accounts). It's just wrong for the day and will be fine going forward.

@mtn_living Perhaps this discussion about Day Gain/Loss (from2019!) might clarify aspects. The caveat there is you are asking about a dashboard card and the cited discussion is about portfolio views. I have never tried to dissect the dashboard calculations.

One bottom line from that discussion - Day Gain/Loss (in portfolio views) is an overly simplified calculation that ignores changes in number of shares.

Thanks all, very helpful. Did not realize limitations of the dashboard or other day/loss calcs.
