Quicken for Mac downloads Morgan Stanley
I have converted from Quicken from Windows to Quicken for Mac. I am still running Quicken for Windows and comparing the two .
I have Morgan Stanley as one of my brokerage accounts . I have all dividends set up as reinvested number of shares. The most recent transactions show up as " Interest income and Buy" , however my total shares compared to my brokerage account is off . The " buy " transaction is not increasing the number of shares ?
Has anyone else experienced the same issue and if so how do you correct ?

Howdy, again, @jjrichards
I assume you have two transactions of Type "Interest Income" and a subsequent "Buy" for the equivalent amount. Are those amounts being reported correctly? If so, great!
I suspect your angst comes again from your usual culprit here: the placeholder offsetting your Buy for this fund. (It gets added for a reason-more on that)
I hold accounts with MS, and even with Direct Connect, I have seen where they push out the daily account transactions, but don't update share balances until later at night. So, you will get a placeholder offsetting that day's Buy until MS updates the total share balance around midnight EST.
I would relax and update tomorrow, and the problem will likely be resolved when the total shares is correctly reported. (Yes, you could delete the placeholder in the interim to resolve, but if you do nothing, it will delete itself when MS reports the correct share balance.)
This is not a QWin/QMac issue, but more how MS reports things-especially if you are in more Westward time zones. Your beloved QWin might have reported the mismatch (that will self-resolve)-but it is something you are quickly becoming aware of. Sometimes such minutia is not helpful.
I hope this helps. You will figure out what is going on.

Hi Jon:
I started updating Q for Mac just earlier this morning ( I am in CA Pacific time zone ) after three weeks . I was only working on Q for Windows during that period . There were three transactions two on 11 6 and one on 11-3 on Morgan Stanley . I did not see a "placeholder". . On those three recent transactions I just amended the category to " reinvest dividend " from the buy and deleted the " interest income " transaction. The shares now balance .
Strange I had another stock dividend reinvested today ( received notification at 9:45 Paciifc with " Buy " and "interest income " transactions and the number of shares on Q Mac matched Etrade account where I downloaded from.
I will update both the Win & Mac versions daily to see if there are any other issues . Today my Etrade accounts match 100% on both Win & Mac. The one Morgan Stanley account on Q for Mac was off , that's what posed the question
I do appreciate all your advice and help since you have run both Windows and Mac versions for many years

It sounds like you got this resolved. Great! (if I am reading this correctly)
Using the Reinvest Dividend versus separate transx for the (Cash in) and Buy should yield the same results, just as with QWin. And it sounds like the lack of placeholders indicates your share balance has now been correctly updated from MS.

Hi John:
I did amend the transaction myself in Quicken Mac to " dividend reinvestment " to show the correct shares.
Quicken for windows has been showing " dividend income & buy transaction " , shares have been correct.
I have been running both Q for Win and Q for Mac trying to decide on which one I will use. I assume you are Q for Mac after switching Q for Windows ?

You can use either Reinvest Dividend or separate transactions for the income and buy: it doesn't matter. Also whether you use "Dividend Income" or "Interest Income"+the subsequent buy is up to you.
I personally wouldn't mind separate transactions (the Internet Income and Buy) if this was indeed interest earned on cash (Money Market), with subsequent buys of the Money Market Fund.
Without seeing your data, I really can't say what is going on with your one errant MS account. I think you will figure it out if you look at your Portfolio and compare that with the MS account when coupled with your transactions view.
I personally have used Quicken for Mac for 34 years as a Mac was my main computer. I just always kept a PC around for testing purposes, including QWin. I know QWin has some more features, but I can deal with those omissions for a more modern, reliable app. Which you find more important is up to you.

Hi John:
I reposted a response on another question that Kristina from Quicken responded too. I tried her solution in Q for Mac , with no success. This is on an annuity which I know is difficult to track in Quicken , however Q for Windows handles correctly

I don't know which question you are referring to as you have multiple threads going on here. :-)
I do hope you resubmitted your file & logs for your issue with prices being a day behind in your Fidelity account. The logs are key for the developers. You can keep the screenshots-the developers will contact you if needed.
I am looking forward to hearing what worked/din't in the appropriate conversation.
Take care, Jeff!

Hi John:
My Fidelity account is ok , its wife's 403 B . The thread ( question I posed ) I posted on 10-9-25 the title of the thread was " Morgan Stanley Download Quicken for Mac" . I provided feedback on 11 12 to Kristina Quicken on her suggestion .
The issue is an annuity that I have in MS account . Since an annuity does not have stock symbol I update the value " manually by either adding or subtracting shares ". Understand this may be not the best way to track .
The issue is in Q for Mac I transferred my Windows data which included the annuity. In for Q Mac when I run an update since it shows the downloaded annuity value and reads also the account that I have updated the value manually . Thus when look at my account it shows as " Elite and Elite 2 " Thus close to doubling the value.
In Q for Windows it works fine ( does not double up ) and not sure how I corrected from this annuity not being updated since its been 9 years ! If you look at thread I started on 10-9-25 title above you will see responses from Kristina from Q.
Understand this may be confusing ( sometimes better to explain by call ). Let me know if you have thoughts

Jeff, I just got a chance to read this. Let me look at it in more detail tomorrow. It't too late tonight.
My apologies about the comment about submitting logs-that does not apply here. (Some crosstalk, and that was in reference to another person in CA.)

Hi John:
Thanks for looking into this . I was reading on net yesterday Q for Mac ( copy & pasted to my post) , Q for Mac does NOT let you deselect one stock from updating automatically . Q for Windows does . That is the issue for me since it's . an annuity and I update the value manually each week , Q for Mac when I update creates a second account " Elite 2" . The original I imported from Q Windows shows Elite
Kristina from Quicken informed me you should be able to " deselect one stock " gave me procedure however since I cannot " delete stock / annuity " , it's. not working . I am awaiting her response

Howdy, again, @jjrichards I apologize for the delay-your posting got lost in the shuffle.
Looking at your last posting, I suspect this might be an easier fix: If you are seeing this Annuity listed as "Elite" and "Elite 2", it appears that Quicken is viewing this as two separate securities. (This isn't a Mac/Windows thing-more how things are being presented from the brokerage) You have your transactions in your file, and the brokerage is reporting theirs, so you get doubling.
After making a backup, I would go into Window:Securities, and locate the two similar Elite funds. Make sure both have the same "Type" (likely, "Other", but it might be different-they just have to match.) Select both of them, and click "Merge Securities" at the bottom of the window. This should make them one-and all the transactions will affect the same share balance and what is reported from the brokerage.)
Let me know how it works.
And also, Quicken is not a real time system, so I suggest only updating once a day. For CA, that might be late at night or early morning.

Hi John
I have been running my Q for Windows and the annuity I have been discussing does not " double up" . In Q for Windows I go to " Tools , Security List , Download quotes box , then unselect the annuity / stock from updating automatically . Its worked for years .
On Q for Mac there is no " tools section " . I have tried all solutions Kristina has provided however the manual Annuity account I have set up & the current balance from Morgan Stanley shows up as well . Q for Mac labels Elite 2 for the Morgan Stanley account .
I know one solution is to delete the manual account I have created , that said why I created is that the annuity value changes daily , thus weekly I either add/ remove " shares " . The Morgan Stanley download since coming from Jackson is minimum 2 days behind .
Understand this may be confusing and not the correct way to handle an annuity .

Howdy Jeff @jjrichards
Yes, I am confused, so let's (try to) get on the same page here. :-) This thread started with reinvesting dividends.
You now know that you can't disable downloading quotes for a single security in QMac. OK, but why you want to is the bigger question? And I don't think that should be problematic.
If MS is providing quotes/share balances for this account, then why aren't you? Is it not accurate?
Or, have you hand-crafted a way to represent this annuity in QWin in the past that mostly worked, but now that MS is connected online in QMac, it is updating prices in an undesirable fashion? I suspect so.
I am less familiar with annuities, but it appears yours has an underlying security albeit not publicly listed-hence why you are getting prices from MS. (It wouldn't be adding/removing shares otherwise.) I am guessing that MS is providing that unlisted price upon update, and that is conflicting with your home-brew method/converted method of representing this. In QWin, you just told it to ignore the downloaded price.
I really think you can get this working. The more details, the better. Thanks!

Hi John:
To be clearer my issue from using Q Mac now rather than Q Win , is that in Q Win I was ABLE to mark this annuity from downloading from my Morgan Stanley account . In Q Win I created a " manual account " for this annuity updating the value weekly be either adding or removing shares .
In Q windows I am able to do this by "Tools , Security List , Download quotes box , then unselect the annuity / stock from updating automatically " I have not been able to find the same feature from Q Mac.
To answer your question MS is connected online with Q Mac. All my other stocks and bonds update with prices . Jackson the annuity does download the value in Q Mac , however always 2-3 days behind in value. I go to my Jackson account on line and compare that to what MS shows and it's off.
I Q Mac since I have the manual account created called "Elite " ( the Jackson annuity name) , when I update Q Mac creates " Elite 1 " , thus I show close to both values in my portfolio. I say close since the value from MS differs from my Jackson direct . I called MS directly then cannot explain
Since " Tools , Security list, Download quotes " is not an option in Q Mac , is there another option just to exclude this annuity value from downloading ?

Hi again, Jeff @jjrichards Thanks for the details as they help.
You understand that can't exclude individual securities from downloading in QMac. But, I am still confused as to why you want/need to?
If I am reading this correctly (and advise me if I am wrong), you are getting this annuity double counted because you have you a manually created account, and what is also being reported from MS? In essence, do you have two accounts for the same annuity? If so, you will have to decide which account you wish to use going forward.
If MS is reporting the account, then why not use what they are reporting? Is it because the prices are a few days out of step and "off"? (I think you can figure that out.) You might wish to continue fro orward with that Elite 1 (which you can rename) account and ditch your manually created account.

Hi John:
Your correct the annuity is double counted. Since Q for Mac does not allow you to exclude one account from downloading ,what I have been doing is the original transaction on Jackson that downloads , I delete the inception purchase . This then deletes the Elite 2 account . My manual account still exists
The other option as you suggest is to 1. delete the manual account 2. Let Morgan Stanley download the value of the annuity even if it's off. Not sure how many days off , I need to start tracking .
A suggestion for Quicken for Mac team to allow an option to not download current stock prices / values just like Q for Windows
Thanks

Jeff:
Is this annuity an actual separate account, or an individual security held within another account? (I suspect the former.) Do they show separately in the sidebar?
QMac won't allow you to disable downloading the price for an individual securities. You can disable a single account from downloading. That might be your underlying desire here-although that might not be the best solution here. I advise against that.
When setting up accounts for downloading, during "Account Discovery" where you can link found accounts to those in your file, that same popup has the option to Ignore/Prevent downloads for the account found. You could prevent downloads there.
But, I really don't know if ignoring the download is best. If the MS presented balances are "off", let's figure that out and deal with that versus trying to make your manually entered transactions work. I feel like we are masking a problem-and one account has to go.

Hi John:
Yes the annuity is held within my Morgan Stanley account that has other stocks and bonds .
Since Q Mac does not allow an individual annuity / stock from downloading ( Windows Version does ) , it's. probably best to " delete the manual account " I transferred from Q for Windows . Then when I update the MS and my E Trade accounts , Elite ( annuity ) will have a value , granted days old. I will just for curiosity start tracking how many days behind .
The way I do this now is the only true transaction in Q on the annuity from the download from MS is 9 years ago when purchased . I just delete the transaction , Elite 2 account does not show , and my manual account that I transferred from Q Win shows . That's the one I add or remove shares weekly to show the current value of the annuity .
Happy Thanksgiving , thanks for your help

Greetings, Jeff. I hope you had a meaningful Thanksgiving.
It's established that you can't disable downloading a (currently held) single security-let's move on from that. I don't think it matters in the end.
Again: I can't see your data, but if Morgan Stanley is reporting this, then why are not using what they report, albeit a few days old? I still have a sinking suspicion that you are using some old school method of manually reporting the annuity in QWin that got transferred over. And now you are trying to paper over that.
You might be right that it may be best to delete this manual account if it is the source of your hardships. just make a backup beforehand.

Hi John:
You are correct the manual account I set up and updating the annuity value by " adding or removing shares " is not the best way to handle the current value of the annuity.
I will delete the manual account and let the download from Morgan Stanley take over.
I did check my Morgan Stanley account and Jackson annuity . The Morgan Stanley account is as of 11-26, Jackson of course yesterday Friday 28th. The actual value difference is $ 1,100 not a lot.
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving as well

Jeff: if your manual annuity account is simply a manual added one (and one with no online connection), you might wish to simply mark it as closed (right or control click on it's name in sidebar). It will enter the necessary adjustment transaction(s) to zero it out. And you can elect (default setting) to have it hidden so it won't interfere with things. You can always reopen the account later if needed.
That way, you can avoid the double counting (without deleting the other account) and focus more on how MS is reporting its values and underlying transactions. You might find the expected 2 day delay is tolerable in the overall picture.

Hi John:
Thank you for the suggestion . Your correct two day delay and having the download record is what's best, then what I am doing currently is deleting the duplicate account ( transaction ) every time I update
