I thought I would save someone the trouble of searching for this. After a four day weekend trying to figure it out, here are the steps to connect Quicken to UBS Wealth Management:

1. Log into onlineservices.ubs.com and go to Settings-Account Settings-Financial Software Download (OFX)

2. Check the box "I would like my Online User Name…", enter your UBS password in the box below, and click Save.

3. You must now wait for an email from UBS informing you that they have set up this service.

4. In Quicken, add a new account searching for UBS. Select Financial Services from the list.

It seems like a lot of users are experiencing persistent CC-800 errors lately. These steps are the only way I have found to more permanently fix the reoccurring CC-800 errors and CC-800 errors that affect multiple financial institutions.

Make a backup of your data file. Also, make backups during this process, just in case you need to go back a step.

Print an Account List. Open the Account List (Ctrl-A). Click on “Options” in the lower left of the window. Make sure “Include additional info when printing” and “Show transaction download status” are checked. Then, click on the printer icon to print the list, or save it to a PDF. The Export option produces a file, but it’s not as easy to read.

Make note of Financial Institution, Account Number, and, Transaction Download from the Account List. This information may be needed for verification in the reactivation process.

Validate your data file. Click on File → Validate and Repair File, then select "Validate". Click "OK". Review the "Validate & Repair log" for any messages that need to be acted upon.

Super Validate your data file. Same as step #2, except hold Ctrl-Shift when clicking on "Validate and Repair File".

Do a Quicken "Copy File" to create a copy of your data file. This process forces a rewrite of code and fixes some file corruption issues. It will also clear out online connection "remnants" for all accounts. Click on File → Copy or Backup File, and select "Create a copy or template", and then click Next.

On the next screen, leave the defaults as is. You can change the new file name and location, if you wish. Click on "Save Copy".

During the copy process, you will be asked to provide a password for the new file. If you don't want a password, hit ESC.

When the process completes, switch over to the new data file (copy).

For EWC+ accounts (noted in the Account List), go to each of your financial institutions’ websites and log into your online banking account. Locate the section where connected apps or third-party access is managed and make sure to unlink or disconnect Quicken from your accounts on the bank’s end. This may be listed under "Security," "Settings," or "Authorized Apps" depending on the institution. If you do not see a link or a third-party authorization, it may have already been deleted by the deactivation process in Quicken.

Reactivate online services for all accounts in the new data file, by using “Add Account” (do not use “Set up now” on the Online Services tab of Account Details) and carefully link to existing accounts in Quicken. If needed, use the FI information from the Account List for account mapping.

These steps don't guarantee that the CC-800 errors won't return. There seems to be a lot of different situations that can cause the EWC and EWC+ connections to break that ultimately results in these CC-800 errors, but hopefully these steps can help you get a more permanent fix until Quicken can find the cause of the issue.

I bought a new miniPC recently. Upon installing Quicken, I also ran into the blank Quicken login screen. Turns out my issue was the new miniPC ended up with an older version of Webview2 dated like 2022. Once I force removed it, Quicken then reported no Webview2 was installed and installing a current version resolved it.

In Windows Settings → Apps → Installed Apps, Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime showed a version from 2022. The uninstall button was grayed out. New versions would not install over the top.

NOTE: I had uninstalled Anti-virus and shut off firewalls and VPN just in case but not sure these were ever issues.

Steps:

Force removed Webview2 via instructions found on the Internet

Click on the magnifying glass icon and type cmd inside the search bar.

Right-click on the top result to open the Command Prompt app. Select Run as Administrator.

Next, navigate to the path where it is installed by typing the command below and pressing Enter:

cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeWebView\Application\1*\Installer"

Next, type or paste the following command to silent uninstall it and press Enter:

.\setup.exe --uninstall --msedgewebview --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

I may have rebooted to be safe

Ran Quicken and it indicated Webview2 was not installed so closed out.

Downloaded Webview2 from

<span data-embedjson="{"body":"When distributing your application, there are a few ways you can ensure the WebView2 Runtime is on client machines. Learn more about those options.

This past weekend (11/7-8/24), CPFCU finally fixed an issue in their QFX file downloads where the contents of the ACCTID field did not uniquely identify the account that was being downloaded. CPFCU uses a two part account number. A 6 digit member number and a 4 digit account type identifier. The four part portion differentiates the multiple accounts a member might have (0000 for 1st share, 0080 for 1st draft).

To properly identify an account, both parts were needed. CPFCU was only putting half of that information in the ACCTID field, so Quicken would try to stick all of the information into a single account unless the user edited the file and changed the ACCTID.

Over the weekend they updated the software to include both the 6 & 4 digit numbers in the ACCTID field and everything works as it should.

A Quicken user will need to re-link their accounts, but that will be a one time occurrence.

Here is the key that I figured out. I recently added 2025 and everything looked right for 2024 and 2025. I had to create just the budget categories option for adding 2025 then used Dec 2024 budget and 'copied budget from Dec 2024 forward to end of 2025.' I did that for each budgeted category. At that point I saved the Quicken file.

Every single time I would cloud sync it would literally eff up many of my budget category amounts for 2024. Each time I had to restore from backup. I tried all the posted tricks about turning off cloud and forcing replacement of cloud file etc. Same result every time grrrrr…

Solution:

Get your budget looking like you want it (including 2025 or whatever) and then 'duplicate budget' and name it something else… i.e 'budget 2'

Delete the original budget and save the quicken file with timestamp (just in case)

Sync with cloud and since there's no [Removed - Profanity] existing cloud budget to [mess] things up, it works like a charm. I suggest doing this anytime you add another year.

Cheers!

People seem to feel that if they select "Hide in Transaction Entry Lists" (which is also what Close account does) in the Manage Hidden Accounts list or in the Display Options tab, that the account should no longer appear in the "Transfers", but it doesn't work that way or one might say it is inconsistent, because it doesn't something different in different data files.

The fundamental reason why this isn't true is because transfers aren't accounts.

So, the next question is then what are they? Well, that is just it, they hold a nebulous place in Quicken. They show up in the category filed in the registry and on the Category list.

They reused this field for something that can't happen at the same time, you can't categorize a transfer.

This is all well and good, but then they didn't follow through with this idea when it came to hiding it in list.

If you go to the Category list, you will notice that the transfers are on that list, but the "hide" check box is greyed out. This is the logical place for the hiding of transfers, but they didn't implement that way. This is what I feel they should change.

So, what is it doing right now?

People tend to associate transfers with accounts, and so think/push for the idea that if they hide an account the transfer should also be hidden. Here is where you can see the inconsistent treatment of this by the Quicken developers over the years, and what I believe are bugs.

In some data files no transfers are hidden no matter what you select. In others they are hidden when you select "Hide in Transaction Entry Lists" (but even this isn't "correct"). What separates the two different behaviors/data files? No one knows for sure, but it has sort of been assumed that "old data files" have the behavior that you can never hide them, and new data files have the other behavior.

But you notice I said that that second behavior isn't correct either?

It isn't for two reasons. It is inconsistent with the fact that Transfers appear with categories, not accounts, but even more to the point can be shown in this dialog.

Once would expect that by selecting the "Show hidden categories" the Transfers that are hidden would appear too in the data files that are hiding them. This isn't the case. So, this behavior isn't even consistent.

Also, it isn't recommended to use Backup and Restore to move a data file back and forth between two machines when you will be doing it frequently.
Edit the QDF file name and change the "set" lines as needed. Above, QDF file is called Current.qdf, it resides in the standard place of Documents\Quicken (in OneDrive), %USERPROFILE% is your user folder. The "local folder/copy" where it will be copied to and run Quicken from is the folder c:\Quicken, which will be created if it doesn't already exist.

File → Save, save it to whatever folder you like, with whatever name you like, but you have to end the name with .cmd. That makes it a "script". Note I don't suggest the Desktop, for this file. The reason will be, because you will most likely want to make a shortcut to this file and put that on your Desktop. Your Documents folder is a good place for it.

If you double click on the "Quicken.cmd" file In Windows File Explorer it will copy the data file to the DATA_DIR and then open Quicken with that data file. It will copy it back when you close Quicken.

If you right click (Hold down shift key on Windows 11) on the "Quicken.cmd" file in Windows File Explorer you will get the context menu and can select Send to → Desktop (create shortcut).

Now you can use that shortcut in the same way.

I will start by saying that in my opinion the only valid use case for automatic transfer detection is when the user is using in conjunction with automatic transaction entry mode and both sides of the transfer are downloaded in the same One Setup Update session. And even then, the user might be better off not using it.

The next thing I will say is that people have understand that there is nothing in downloaded information that Quicken Windows makes use of that makes automatic transfer detection anything other than a guess based on the amounts of the transactions and the approximate dates. I have tested this and the dates of the two transactions must be within 5 days of each other.
<div data-embedjson="{"recordID":7944743,"recordType":"discussion","body":"<p>This is just some information on what is and what isn’t available to Quicken Windows for trying to do automatic transfer detection.<\/p><p>In general, Quicken really has two things for the two sides of a transfer, the date and the amounts. Quicken will assume that two downloaded transactions are a transfer if the dates are within 5 days and if the amounts are the same, but with opposite signs.<\/p><p>One might wonder if there is any more information that might be sent with the downloaded transaction that would help Quicken make this decision. As best I can, I will give you what I know about this.<\/p><p>First off in both Direct Connect and Express Web Connect + it has been noted that the financial institution can mark a transaction as a transfer. But in both cases that I have seen this reported (USAA and Venmo) it has been done at the wrong time and caused nothing but problems.<\/p><p>In the case of USAA it was marking all deposits as transfers, and in the case of Venmo in the strictest sense it was doing the right thing, but because how the user was using it they wanted it to be a deposit not a transfer. Marking something as a transfer assumes the other side of that transfer is in Quicken, and it might not be. As in one might “transfer money to a friend”.<\/p><p>This marking of a transaction as a transfer makes Quicken put TXFR in the check number\/reference number field and will restrict the category to a transfer.<\/p><p>The other information that can be put in based on the OFX standard (Direct Connect) is the name of the accounts involved in such a transfer. First off, these names will not be the ones you use for the account in Quicken, so Quicken would have to save this name while the accounts are being created and coordinate them with the actual account in Quicken. But this only works when the transfers are between accounts in the same financial since a given financial will not know the name of the account the transfer is going to at another financial institution.<\/p><p>And then there is the fact that for Express Web Connect (and most likely Express Web Connect +) this information isn’t being provided at all.<\/p><p>So given the inconsistency of such data, it isn’t any wonder that Quicken Windows isn’t making use of it.<\/p>","bodyRaw":"[{\"type\":\"p\",\"children\":[{\"text\":\"This is just some information on what is and what isn’t available to Quicken Windows for trying to do automatic transfer detection.\"}]},{\"type\":\"p\",\"children\":[{\"text\":\"In general, Quicken really has two things for the two sides of a transfer, the date and the amounts.

Since this is always a guess on Quicken’s part, the user should always select the option to have Quicken confirm any automatic transfer detected.

Note the worst possible situation for automatic transfer detection is if the user has multiple transactions that have the same amount. This could be transferring say $100 frequently, or a $100 transfer at the same time you have a regular transaction for $100 or a combination of both. Better results would be obtained by unique amounts, so that say a $100 transfer will not match with a $150 ATM withdraw.

Below I will go into all the different situations where this subject comes up, and give the current recommendations, my recommendations, and merits of these and possible problems with a given use case.

For automatic transfer detection to kick in, both sides of the transfer must have been downloaded.

I will start with the only use case that I think is “valid”.

USE CASE 1: You have automatic transaction entry mode on, and both sides of the transfer download in the same One Step Update session, and the dates are within 5 days of each other. Because both sides of the transfer are downloaded at the same time, and the automatic transfer detection will kick in after the downloading of transactions, this will kick in before the user can review the downloaded transactions.

PROBLEMS with USE CASE 1: Then main ones are that it is a guess, and that it is restricted to 5 days on the dates between the two sides of the transfer. So, you can have a false match, and you can have situations where it doesn’t do automatically transfer detection at all.

Now I will go into the “invalid” use cases, and some of the ways that one might deal with transfers.

USE CASE 2a: You have automatic transaction entry mode on, and only one side if the transfer has been downloaded. You didn’t pre-enter anything and no matching memorized payees. When you finish downloading transactions you need to review the transactions downloaded. At this time, the “category” of one side of that transfer should have been entered/fixed to be [Other Account], where “Other Account” is the name of the other account that has the transaction from the other side of this transfer. Given that this is done correctly, there will already be a transaction entered into the other account that the other side of this transfer will be matched to. This matching will be before the looking for automatic transfer detection, and as such automatic transfer detection will never happen.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 2a: User doesn’t do the right thing and review/fix transaction. Also, this gives no insight into cash flow, for example for use in the projected balances graph.

USE CASE 2b: The same as 2a, but there is a memorized payee that matches the payee of the transfer for the payee in the first account, and its “category” is set to [Other Account]. This works the same way as 2a, except that when reviewing the user will find that Quicken has already set the “category” correctly.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 2b: Memorized payees are global, but for this to work right [Other Account] must be the “right category”. Say you have two credit cards that are paid from the same checking account, and the credit cards payments download with the same payee. What is most likely to happen is that the payments will first show up in each of the credit cards accounts. Provided that the memorized payee is [Checking Account] then this will work for both credit card accounts. But do notice that the memorized payee is entered in relationship to it being entered in one of the credit card accounts. If the payee is the same in the Checking account, and it gets processed first then it would get a category of [Checking Account] in the checking account, which would be wrong. This situation only comes up if the payees are the same and if in the same One Step Update session the downloading of the Checking account side of the transfer happens first. The other way this would mess up is if you were paying the two different credit cards from two different checking accounts and the payees in the credit card accounts were the same. This use case also does not have anything for predicting cash flow.

USE CASE 2c: Same as use case 2a, but you either pre-entered a transfer transaction, or had a reminder do that for you. In this case, you should be matching the existing transactions in the registers. Note that this does give information to be used in cash flow.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 2c: Some transfers amounts aren’t known beforehand and only an estimate can be entered. For Quicken to match a downloaded transaction the amount must be exact. If the amounts aren’t exactly what the user must do is change the amount in the pre-entered transaction to match the one downloaded, and then click on the Status/blue dot column for the pre-entered transaction and select Manual Match, which will bring up a dialog to match this transaction with the downloaded one. The two transactions will then be merged.

USE CASE 3a: Automatic transaction entry mode is off, no pre-entered transactions, and no memorized payees. As you can guess these use cases are going to closely resemble the 2 use cases, so I will mostly deal with what is different. When you have Automatic transaction entry mode off, you will be dealing with one account at a time, as such you shouldn’t have the situation where automatic transfer detection ever kicks in, provided you do the right procedure (Use case 1, should never occur!). Transactions go to the Downloaded Transactions tab at the bottom of the register. The proper procedure is to chick on each transaction in the Downloaded Transactions tab and it will be shown in the register. At this time if the “category” for a transfer isn’t [Other Account], you should change that before accepting the transaction in the register. Once you do that, Quicken will also create a linked transaction in the other account and when going through that account Quicken will match the downloaded transaction to this one that is now in that account.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 3a: The same as same as 2a, no cash flow prediction, and the user needs to follow the right procedure. The worst thing someone can do is use Accept All without first making sure that all the transactions are correct. If you use Accept All none of the transactions will have any kind of status that indicates that they are new or new matched, like they would if automatic transaction entry mode was used. Accept All and Automatic transaction enter mode are not the same thing!

USE CASE 3b: This is the same as 2b with exception that you have automatic transaction entry mode off. Instead of “Reviewing” you are selecting the transaction in the Downloaded transactions tab and if correct accepting it into the register.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 3b: The same as with USE CASE 2b.

USE CASE 3c: Basically, the same as USE CASE 2c, with the only real difference being that instead of selecting the Status to start the manual match you would first just change the amount in the pre-entered transaction and Quicken should then change the one in the Downloaded Transactions tab to “Matched”. And you can then accept it into the register.

PROBLEMS WITH USE CASE 3c: The same as USE CASE 2c.

Lifetime Planner: Resources for Setting Medicare Expenses Using the Special Expense Assumption

Last year, I put together a few resources when researching my post-65 Medicare expense assumptions in Lifetime Planner (LTP). Perhaps others will find these resources and approach useful when considering the likely post-65 change in healthcare expenses in their own LTP plan.

The point of this post is to highlight the resources available to you in order to make a better informed estimate around post-65 healthcare costs, given your unique situation, and how to model them in Quicken's Lifetime Planner.

As with any of the planner's inputs, you should review them periodically for relevance and accuracy, especially those expense assumptions historically affected by high inflation rates and government regulations, et al.

Since I am 5 years away from Medicare age, this is a planning/forecasting exercise for me. Please feel free to comment with your forecasting approach or actual experiences.

A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT MEDICARE….

Medicare provides for post-65 healthcare coverage.

It is optional but most sign-up.

MODELLING YOUR MEDICARE EXPENSES IN LIFETIME PLANNNER

My personal recommendation is to enter your Medicare expense assumption using the Special Expenses Assumption, as it allows you to: use "today's dollars", set the inflation rate differently than the overall general inflation rate and easily see your "special expense" under the Event List under Plan Results graph.

In this approach, you would add 2 Special Expense assumptions, one for self and one for spouse, starting at age 65, as show in the image below. In my spreadsheet, I calculated Medicare expenses for one spouse and simply doubled it. Of course, if a spouse has special health needs this would not work.

Don't forget to review your current Pre-65 medical expense assumption so as to not "double dip" when you turn 65 and your Medicare expense assumption kicks in! My approach, is to model my pre-65 medical expenses as a Special Expense Assumption spanning from today to age 65 at which point my post-65 Speical Expense Assumption starts. IOW, I completely separated my medical expenses pre and post-65. Of course there are other approaches, but I found this simplest (and rememberable) for me.

Quicken Credit Score - Comparing Apples to Apples

In all the previous discussions about Quicken’s credit score being grossly inaccurate, no one has said anything about what credit score(s) they are referencing when comparing to Quicken’s displayed credit score. Those discussions have all been closed with no real resolution or explanation for the perceived “problem(s)”.

I too thought Quicken was consistently displaying an inaccurate credit score for me whenever I updated my credit score in Quicken and I pretty much ignored Quicken's credit score as just that – completely inaccurate! The credit score Quicken displayed was always significantly lower than my other credit score sources (my bank, my AMEX card, my Experian account). Recently, after downloading another "inaccurate" credit score in Quicken, I sought to find out why there is such a difference between Quicken's credit score and my other sources of credit scores, thinking an issue must exist between Quicken and Equifax (Quicken's credit score source).

During my research, I noticed that Quicken’s credit score source is the VantageScore 3.0, provided by Equifax. My other sources for viewing my credit scores all use FICO scores. When I view my credit score, Experian shows my FICO Score 8, my bank shows my FICO Score 9, and AMEX shows my FICO Score 8. Experian also shows my FICO Score 2 and FICO Score 3. What does all this mean?

FICO and VantageScore are the two credit scoring authorities, with FICO being the most widely used. Within FICO and VantageScore, there are different models for computing different scores, which results in various FICO scores and various VantageScores. Some scores are used for determining credit card lending while others are used for mortgage lending and auto loan lending. For a detailed explanation, use your browser's search engine to research "FICO Score vs VantageScore".

As I said, other than Quicken, my credit score sources all display my FICO Scores. However, when I compare my FICO Score 3 (mostly used for credit card lending) to Quicken's VantageScore 3 (also used for credit card lending), those scores are more closely aligned. Comparing my FICO Score 8 or 9 to Quicken’s VantageScore 3.0, there is a significant difference. That being said, one has to wonder why Quicken chooses to use VantageScores when the overwhelming majority of institutions rely on FICO scores?

Bottom line, if you are comparing Quicken's VantageScore 3.0 to your FICO score(s) from another source, expect that there will probably be significant differences between the two with the VantageScore 3.0 being lower than your FICO Score 8 or FICO Score 9 (and even other VantageScores). Keep in mind also that there may be slight variations in credit score values between multiple credit score sources due to the date that score was taken/updated - not all sources update their particular credit scores daily or at the same time.

One last issue which was also discussed in previously closed discussions and which causes great consternation among those who care is the extremely high values displayed for Credit Card Debt and Credit Card Limit, which is also shown as part of Quicken's VantageScore 3.0 credit score display. The value, which Quicken labels as Credit Card Debt, is actually the TOTAL OF ALL CREDIT DEBT (credit cards, credit lines, auto loans, auto leases, real estate loans) and it comes directly from Equifax. When I viewed my FICO Score 3 in Experian, it gives the exact same value that Quicken displays as Credit Card Debt. However, Experian labels it as Total Debt with a breakdown of the $ amount in each category (credit cards, loans, etc.). Quicken needs to rephrase its terms (Credit Card Debt and Credit Card Limit) in its credit score window to Total Debt and Total Debt Limit, which is actually what is being shown. That would certainly clear up the confusion on this topic.

It appears the issue most people have with Quicken's display of their credit score is not understanding which score is being displayed in Quicken when comparing it to other sources of their credit score - they may not be comparing "apples to apples". Quicken should include a FAQ link on their credit score window to further explain in more detail what's being displayed in Quicken's credit score and why it may vary from other credit score sources (FICO vs VantageScore and the various scores within each).

And the fact that Quicken mislabels and shows the Total Debt and Total Debt Limit as Credit Card Debt and Credit Card Limit needs to be fixed by Quicken in a future update to accurately describe the values being shown.

I had several TD Ameritrade accounts that were transferred early this week to Charles Schwab.

Early this week, TD Ameritrada accounts were transferred to Charles Schwab following the merge of both companies. I searched Quicken discussions but could not find a process for transferring my TD Ameritrade accounts to Charles Schwab that worked.

You may want to create a backup of your Quicken file before proceeding below.

Please use the steps below, which are more efficient, less time consuming and let's you keep all your old transactions.

I used the following steps to move the accounts to Schwab in Quicken.
1. I deactivated all my TD Ameritrade accounts. You can now change the account name to Schwab or do it at the end.
2. Used create new account feature in Quicken to create new Charles Schwab accounts (this was done online - not as offline accounts)
3. Quicken automatically sends you to Charles Schwab website, where you enter you credentials and approve your accounts data to be accessed by Quicken.
4. In Quicken, you need to link your newly accessed Schwab account(s) to the TD Ameritrade account(s). In case you have several accounts, you need to make sure that you link each new Schwab to the corresponding TD Ameritrade account.
5. You can now rename your TD Ameritrade account(s) to Schwab, in case you did not do it in the first step above.
6. Check you stock, cash and mutual funds transactions in your new Schwab account(s). Everything was fine with my stocks and mutual funds transactions. I only had to update the cash balance in Schwab account(s) created in Quicken.
7. I ran One Step Update in Quicken and everything works fine.

I hope the above helps other users.

In all cases, the user is ahead of the game to proactively handle this event. In cases I know of, simply relying on downloads from the Financial Institutions (FI) will not yield complete and fully adequate results. Invariably, the cost basis and lot information is lost when the user is not proactive. Fundamentally, there are two approaches available:

Keep the same Quicken account(s)

Create new Quicken accounts

Choosing one path over the other is very much user choice and circumstance dependent.

Keeping the same account.

This basic approach becomes deactivating the online service for the existing account, changing the financial institution information, and the activating the account for the new financial institution (FI). When you connect the account to the new FI, there may be a breadth of new transactions that get downloaded such as Add Shares transactions. In many cases, those transactions just need to be deleted. It may be that some securities were sold and others bought as part of the account transition, especially if money market funds are being treated as securities. All in all, this process should properly maintain all cost basis information. The user still needs to be thorough in reviewing the details.

Creating a new account

This too can be an effective and relatively easy path. It is usually best to create this new account first as an offline account not affiliated with a financial institution. The next step is to use Shares Transferred between Accounts to move all the holdings from the old brokerage account to the new offline account. Cash (if any) is a separate transfer. If a security does not transfer to the new account, it can be sold and the cash transferred, or transferred and sold in the new account. This transfer process will also maintain the cost basis and acquisition dates from the old brokerage to the new. The Shares Transferred function will create a new Add Shares in the new account for each lot of each security. That can become a lot of transactions, but that is really neither good nor bad. Just be prepared.

Once the user is comfortable with the holdings in the new account, it can then be activated for an online connection and downloads with the new brokerage. As with the other process, the first download from the new brokerage may contain numerous transactions that are unnecessary and should be deleted.

EDIT 4/20/23 — If you set up a new account and transfer the holdings, you should also disable online services for the old account. This will prevent extraneous Removed transactions from being downloaded in that account. If the Removed transactions have already been downloaded, they must be deleted before entering the Shares Transferred.

Why one versus the other

Almost all is personal preference.

Keeping the same account minimizes the number of accounts overall in Quicken that the user might deal with. Depending on what performance measure the user follows, results can be cleaner. Tracking long term performance can be easier to see.

Creating a new account offers the possibility of 'starting fresh' with a small account. Often accounts with fewer transactions are more responsive in the user interface.

Special cases

Some brokerages require one account for each mutual fund held; others do not. Such a change might call for one procedure over the other.

In some cases the switchover may take some time. Not all securities get transferred on the same date. In such a case, the new account approach might be better with the Shares Transferred being used as the actual securities are transferred. But either approach can still work if the user is active in managing and following the process.

Are there any Windows settings that can improve Quicken’s performance?

Yes, there are some settings which can potentially
speed up Quicken. But whether they will work for you on your PC
depends heavily on your hardware and, to some extent, other software on your
PC. The information below is based on Windows 10 and may differ on other Windows versions.

Improve Graphics Settings

Let’s start with graphics settings. You might not think Quicken
would be demanding on your PC’s graphics capabilities; it’s not a video game,
after all. But a good portion of Quicken’s display code is old and inefficient
and can benefit from any help it can get.

Close Quicken if it is running.

In the Windows search box, type “Graphics”. You should see “Graphics
Settings / System Settings” at the top of the resulting list. Click on that.

At the top of the resulting window, you may see “Hardware
accelerated GPU scheduling”. If you do see it, set it to ON. This setting
potentially can speed up any application which uses the GPU. You will need to
reboot your PC for this setting to take effect. You can do that now or later. If
you don’t see this setting, your PC does not have the hardware to
accomplish this. Nothing to see here, move along.

In the same window, you should see “Graphics performance preference”.
You want to add Quicken to this list and tell Windows to give it high graphics
performance. Under “Choose an app to set preference”, choose “Desktop app” (not
“Microsoft Store app”, your only other choice). Click Browse and navigate to
the location of your Quicken executable file, usually C:\Program Files(x86)\Quicken\qw.exe.
Add that file to the list of apps (it may be your first one). “Quicken Windows”
should appear in the list. Click it, then Options, High Performance, and Save.

If you enabled hardware accelerated GPU scheduling in the
previous step, reboot your PC now. Then, when you start Quicken, you may see an
improvement in graphics rendering speed. If so, great! You have sped up Quicken
(and probably other applications) without any risk or cost.

Curious nerds out there can read more about this feature
at
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/hardware-accelerated-gpu-scheduling/

Disable Malware Scanning

If you are willing to take a little risk, you can disable malware scanning of Quicken’s
files. Windows Defender can slow down Quicken because of all the checking it
does.

In Windows Defender, under “Virus & threat protection
settings”, under “Exclusions”, click “Add or remove exclusions”. Add the
folders that Quicken uses, namely

·
C:\Program Files(x86)\Quicken

·
C:\ProgramData\Quicken

·
C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\Quicken

·
C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Local\Quicken

If more than one user account uses Quicken, add their Appdata folders as well.

Also add the Quicken executables

·
qw.exe

·
qwSubprocess.exe

If you use an anti-virus program other than Windows
Defender, perform the equivalent exclusions according to that program.

Raise Process Priority

You can also “cheat” a little by raising Quicken’s process
priority from normal to above normal.

To do this, create a shortcut on your desktop or task bar
with the following target:

cmd /c start "Quicken" /abovenormal "C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken\qw.exe"

When you invoke this shortcut, the Windows command processor
will set Quicken’s process priority to “abovenormal”. This will give Quicken a
bit of an advantage over other processes which are competing for the run queue.

You can also set the shortcut to start in Quicken’s
application data folder by setting that to

%APPDATA%\Quicken

Good Luck!

That’s it! Hopefully, one or more of these hacks will speed

up Quicken for you.

I struggled with this so I am posting my solution. I contacted AMEX support but they did not have the answer for How To Obtain A Direct Connect login! This is what worked for me:
1. Right click account->Edit/Delete Account->Online Services
2. Deactivate from existing online service (Express Web Connect)
3. Reenter your AMEX website login credentials and RELINK the credit card account (be sure to do this very important step!).
Now, when you review Online Services, you should see the Connection Method: Direct Connect

WARNING: In January 2021 a long there were long discussions on this forum about AMEX Direct Connect failing to work properly. Some reverted the connect to Express Web Connect in order to get their transaction downloads to work.

There are some added complexities that come with tracking two or more people’s finances. Most commonly, people associate combining financial tracking with marriage, but there are many circumstances that may require tracking multiple people’s accounts and spending. You may be tracking finances for yourself and a spouse, partner, parent, child, or someone in your care. The key to tracking more than one person is to establish a way to keep tabs on each person separately, as well as to track shared spending. Here are a few tools you can take advantage of.

About combining your finances

Before you sit down to combine your finances in Quicken, there are some things you should consider.

Align on the what, who, and how

Even if only one of you is going to maintain the budget in Quicken, working out the initial details together will prevent confusion and frustration later on. This means choosing categories, determining who is in charge of what bills, and deciding on what your goals for the future are. The more issues you address from the beginning, the fewer surprises you’re going to encounter later on.

Meet the person half-way

One person is often more detailed in their accounting than the other. You may also have different spending goals, different budget needs, and different attitudes about income and debt. As much as you may feel you have the right approach, you are going to have to work together to find an approach that works for everyone. Asking someone else to follow a system they don’t believe in is not going to work in the long run.

Establish a good communication schedule to track and share regular updates

Whether you want to review your finances weekly, monthly, or quarterly, each person should be updated regularly. Quicken has a number of reports that are useful for this, especially Spending reports. It is a good idea to review the reports together.

Tracking your combined finances

Depending on your accounts and budget goals, there are three primary ways to track your spending and budgeting separately, even with combined finances. Keep in mind that tracking everyone separately is optional. If it isn't important to you to know who made each transaction, then you don’t need to track everyone separately. There are good reasons to do this though, especially if you need to track spending related to a business or other individual spending situation.

Tracking by Account

People often have different accounts that they are either solely or primarily responsible for. In cases like this, adding a person’s name to the name of that account is a straightforward way of tracking these accounts separately.

Ted’s Checking Account

Ashley’s Savings Account

Marco’s Credit Card

Alia’s IRA

Separating by account is handy, but works best when an account is solely used by that person. Separating by account is also the easiest way to create separate budgets because you can include or exclude individual accounts from a budget.

Tracking using Tags

When you share an account, one of the best ways to track each person’s spending is with the use of Tags. You can start by assigning each person a tag with their name. That way you can run a report for each tag to track the transactions. You can make this as granular as you want, adding multiple tags per person if you want to analyze their spending more closely. You may also want to tag shared transactions.

Ted’s Spending

Ashley’s Income

Marco’s College Expenses

Family Vacation

Tracking using Categories

If you need to create separate budgets, and you have shared accounts, then another option is to create categories for each person’s spending. Unless you need separate budgets, this is probably not the best approach because there are many spending categories, and you would need to create new entries for the categories each person uses, which can make for a very long category list.

To track by category, the best idea is to use Quicken’s existing categories, but add the person's name consistently at the beginning or end of the category name. That way, you have some standardization.

Ted - Auto & Transport

Ashley - Income

Marco - Education

Alia - Gifts & Donations

Separating Accounts

You might want to prevent an account from being calculated as part of your Net Worth. This is especially true if you are managing a bank account for another person, such as a child or someone else in your care. You might also do this if you are tracking transactions for an organization or club. When you edit an account, you can opt to mark the account as separate. If you do this, the account still appears on your account bar, but it is not counted toward your net worth.

In Summary

Combining your finances works best when you work together. Choose a strategy that is appropriate for your situation. It may take extra effort in Quicken, and it may require other changes outside of Quicken, such as modifying bank accounts, credit cards, or other assets. Expect there to be some stress, and some issues to resolve. Be clear on your goals and your needs, and be patient.

When the end of the year comes, it is a good time to assess your finances. The best way to do this is to take advantage of Quicken’s extensive number of reports and graphs.

Below are five reports you should review at the end of the year. You can access any report from the Quicken Reports menu. Remember to set your date range to capture the year.

Banking Summary Report

The Banking Summary report is a great starting point for reviewing your finances. It provides an overview of your financial situation. From there you can see both your income for the year and your expenses listed by category. Be sure to check to see if there are uncategorized transactions. The report also lists all your transfers between accounts.

Net Worth Report

The Net Worth report helps you see how your circumstances have changed over the year. A good way to use this report is to set the Interval to Monthly. This lets you see how your assets and liabilities changed from month to month.

Tax Summary Report

There are many useful tax reports, but a good place to start is the Tax Summary Report. It will give you an overview of your taxable income and expenses.

Spending by Category / Spending by Payee

Spending by Category is the best way to see what areas you have spent your money in. It is useful for setting up a budget and evaluating how you spend. Spending by Payee is a useful report that people often overlook. Knowing where you are spending money is an important aspect of knowing how you are spending your money.

This tutorial is an update to the previous article with the same name. It describes the accounting for the purchase and the sale of a home in Quicken using the HUD-1 form. We will walk through the purchase of a property from the point of view of the Buyer who will purchase a house. We will describe a typical house payment on a mortgage for the property. Then we will look at the sale of the
same property from the point of view of the Seller, who will sell the house six months later. We will understand how the HUD-1 works and how it relates to Quicken transactions. Accounting for these HUD-1 expenses is important for accuracy and completeness, and because in many cases housing expenses and closing costs are tax-deductible.

Initially, you must set up the accounts in Quicken if you don’t have them already. For this tutorial, I created a bank account in Quicken called “My Checking”. You can use whatever names you want. I will start with an opening balance of $100,000. Next, I created a Property Asset account (“My House”), and another asset account (“Washer Dryer”) for personal property purchased along with the house. If you have a mortgage, you need to create a liability account(“Home Mortgage”). If your mortgage lender requires you to prepay taxes and insurance into a mortgage escrow account, you need to create an asset account for that in Quicken as well (“Home Mortgage Escrow”). I created a Net Worth report which lists all of these accounts in Figure 1 (Balance Sheet).

**Figure 1**

For this tutorial, you will need a basic understanding of double-entry accounting.

Double-entry accounting is based on a simple rule: for every transaction, there is an equal and opposite transaction.

So, for example, if I pay $50 for supplies, I subtract 50 from a checking account and add 50 to my supplies expense account. If I buy a copy machine for $250, I subtract 250 from a checking account add 250 to a copy machine asset account. Quicken utilizes double-entry accounting through Categories and Transfers. The check for $50 for expenses is categorized into an expense category. The check for $250 is “transferred” to a copy machine asset account in the Category field.

Purchase of the House

The first step in any real estate sales transaction is signing the contract. From an accounting standpoint, the transaction starts with the Buyer giving the Seller an Earnest Money Deposit, typically $1,000. This check is usually not cashed, and the amount is included in the down
payment. In Quicken, our first transaction is the check written to the title company for $1,000. In Figure 2 (My Checking Account), you can see the check as it appears in the My Checking account register, with a transfer to the My House account.

**Figure 2**

After this, the transaction goes into escrow, and from an accounting standpoint, nothing
usually happens until closing. Any checks written during this time for inspections or repairs are treated as ordinary expenses. Once the escrow closes, you are given a Settlement Statement (HUD-1 form) that lists all the transfers between Buyer and Seller, and all the closing costs such as escrow, title, and loan fees, that occurred as part of the escrow.

The HUD-1 is a standardized government form used in nearly all real estate transactions. You
may download one from the HUD website:

https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/administration/hudclips/forms/hud1

The HUD-1 uses the terms “Borrower” and “Seller”, but we will refer to them as “Buyer” and “Seller” because this is a more accurate description. You need to understand how the HUD-1 works in order to make sense of the upcoming Quicken entries.

The HUD-1 is basically a statement of the escrow for both the Buyer and Seller. On page 1, it
starts with Sections A to me for contact and reference information, but, we are only interested in starting with Section J (Summary of Borrower’s Transaction), and Section K (Summary of Seller’s Transaction), which you can see below in Figure 3 (Sections J and K).

Page 2 of theHUD-1 contains Section L (Settlement Charges), which is a detailed breakdown of
costs and prepaid expenses. The total of these is carried up to Page 1, Line
103 for the Buyer and Line 502 for the Seller.

There is a Page 3 of the HUD, but we are not interested in the Comparison of Good Faith Estimate
and HUD-1 charges since I doubt anyone inputs data from their GFE into Quicken
that needs to be reconciled. I don’t.

Looking closely at HUD-1 Page 1 in Figure 3 (HUD-1 Sections J and K), we see that Section J is the left column, the Buyer’s side, and Section K is on the right, which is the Seller’s side. On the Buyer’s side, the top part is Section 100, which lists the amounts due from the Buyer. These are additions to the escrow from the Buyer (+). The middle portion, Section 200, contains credits due to the Buyer and are subtractions from the escrow to the Buyer (-).

The bottom portion, Section 300, is either the cash in from the Buyer, or cash out to the Buyer, depending on the math in the immediately preceding subtotals (+)(-).

FAQ: A program to add the account name and type to QIF files so that Quicken will import them.

The purpose of ImportQIF is to add the account name and type to a QIF file so that it can be imported into a Quicken account register. With this information added to the QIF, Quicken will allow bypassing the current restrictions on what type of accounts Quicken will allow you to import a QIF file into.
It also has options for:

Non US Dates (as in changing foreign dates to US dates).

Common Decimal Mark (allows for an amount in the format 1.000.000,00 instead of the standard US format of 1,000,000.00).

Swapping the payee and memo fields.

The default is to register ImportQIF as the default QIF file handler, so that when you open a QIF from your web browser or Windows Explorer, ImportQIF will be run and you can select one button to save a Converted.QIF file n your desktop.

This part of this program is free for you to use as long as you like.

ImportQIF adds the advanced features of automatically importing the converted QIF file into Quicken and also to convert from OFX (MS Money), CSV, XLS/XLSX (Excel) files into QIF files. Please note that at present conversions from OFX are not supported for investment accounts. Furthermore, OFX to QIF conversion is not supported on liability accounts.

Also note that starting with the Subscription version
of Quicken, QIF imports no longer match existing transactions, but even
more than that no processing is done, which means it also doesn't use
your memorized payees to fill in the categories. There are workarounds
in ImportQIF for the filling in of the categories, (not the match of
transactions), but it might be best to do this with Quicken 2017 or earlier instead
of Quicken subscription.

These new advanced features are not free. You can try them out during the 30 day trial period, but if you want to use them past that point you will have to purchase a license. If all you need is the original functionality that adds the account name and type to a QIF file for import into a Quicken account register, then you do not need to purchase a license.

Added a "transaction type" column to the CSV/XLS/XLSX mapping to handle data where there is a transaction type like debit/credit that makes the amount negative or positive based on this transaction type value.

Added Experimental, limited support for CSV/XLS/XLSX investment transactions to QIF conversion.
Added support for Short Sell and Cover for Short Sell, in CSV/Excel format.

Added option to change foreign dates to US dates.
Added option to change amounts in the format 100.000,00 to 100000.0, which Quicken needs.
Added option to swap payee and memo fields.
Added option to map the security names to different names.
Added option to compute the security price instead of the fees, or to compute neither.

Added option to ignore certain investment transactions.
Added option to map certain investment transactions to the "Remove Shares" action in Quicken.

PLEASE NOTE this is a program I wrote to help Quicken users, it is not an Intuit product.
Use the following web site for support:
You can download ImportQIF and get support from here:

http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/

Also this is a Windows only program. I do not have a Mac, so I can not produce a Mac program.
