plaeholders marked with * but there are none

When I generate an Investment performance and subtotal by security report, some securities are marked with an "*".
At bottom of report  * means placeholders: When I clicked "show me" it showed 2 accounts and about 6 securities . I fixed those and now the "show me" at the bottom is blank; however, in the report there are still numerous securities with an * next to the security. Anyone have an idea why?

    Placeholders are hidden by default.
    Select Edit -> Preferences -> Investment transactions -> Show hidden transactions, to see them.
