Go to the account that has the placeholder and delete the placeholder from the Placeholder tab in the account.

Just deleting a Placeholder may not be sufficient. You need to enter the correct transaction that should have been there in the first place, otherwise, after the next transaction download, the placeholder may reappear.mshiggins said:Go to the account that has the placeholder and delete the placeholder from the Placeholder tab in the account.

The main account IRA shows the transaction correctly. The date of purchase, cost, total share balance. The Holdings tab show an incorrect share balance by the amount of the purchase in the main account. No manual entries have been made to the account. All were entered thru the one step update process.mshiggins said:Go to the account that has the placeholder and delete the placeholder from the Placeholder tab in the account.

You can't add, modify, or delete transactions in the Security Detail View.
As mshiggins said, you can normally delete "all" placeholders using the "Delete All" button in the "Placeholder Entries" tab below the account.
But it seems that placeholders do not appear in that tab immediately when entered in Quicken. Exiting and restarting Quicken seems to make them appear in the Placeholder Entries tab (and after that, they should continue to appear there until deleted). [Tested in Q2018 R9.34]
But the Placeholder Entries tab is not the only place from which to delete placeholders.
If you tell Quicken to "Show hidden [investment] transactions" (Edit > Preferences > Investment transactions), placeholder transactions will appear in their respective investment accounts along with all the other transactions in the account (placeholders will have an Action value of "Entry"). You can then delete placeholders just as you would delete any other investment transaction.
Another way to delete placeholders is to use the Banking > Transaction report: it does not matter whether hidden investment transactions are displayed in their accounts or whether placeholders appear in the Placeholder Entries tab in the investment account; placeholders should always appear in the Banking > Transaction report (with a Num value of "*Placeholder").
In the Banking > Transaction report you can select multiple transactions just as you would select multiple files in Windows Explorer. Once the transactions have been selected you can right-click one (or left-click the report Edit button) and select "Delete transaction(s)".Quicken user since Q1999. Currently using QW2017.
