QW 17. Just trying to clean up a 25 yr+ data file. Got to be some way to do this. It does not work like deleting other categories. Gives no option to delete or even hide.
Thanks

Account Names that show up in your Categories List, e.g., [ABC Checking] cannot be deleted from your Categories List unless you delete the entire account and all its transactions. If your question is "How do I prevent old, long closed at the bank, accounts from showing in the Category selection list in transaction registers?" so that you don't accidentally use it again in a new transaction ...
- Go into Tools / Manage Hidden Accounts and enable the "Hide in Transaction Entry Lists" or close the account register in Quicken.
- You can also change the account name from "ABC Checking" to "~ABC Checking". In alphabetically sorted selection lists this will push the renamed account to the bottom of the list, making it less likely to be selected.
If you're interested in splitting your Quicken data file in two pieces, an Archive File with transactions older than, e.g., 4 years and a new current data file with everything newer than that please research Year End Copy. Read up about it in Quicken Help and here in the Community. Proceed with care! Backup your data file before you start doing this!5

As you probably know, you cannot delete any category that has any activity. That said, I find I have only one transfer category that has no usage and as you say, cannot delete. I suspect the only way you can delete a transfer category would be to delete the associated accounts. Since these are in reality Accounts and not Categories.

I experimented with one account and deleted all transactions and the account itself, and the transfer still shows up in Categories with no way to delete it. Seems like this should work, but it did not.
Might look into Year End.0 -
Depends on how OCD you are. I never even looked at Transfers category until your post. Is it worth the effort?0

Probably not. I think I am finished with it.
