How do I enter a late rent payment without it goin onto the current month?

Question

Rent is due on the 14th.  Tenant did not pay January rent on time.  The payment was received in an  envelope post marked for February 4th.  When I tried to enter the January payment, with a pay date of February 4th, it automatically put it under February and shows 0 for January.

You may have to enter it as coming in January 31 (which will put it in January) and note in the memo field that it was late.
