What Quicken version and release are you using?
A quick test in my Q 2020, R 23.17, using the register's Search box, upon exit it returns to the bottom of the register's new transaction entry line. That's where, at the start of the Search, the cursor was blinking in. I didn't make any changes to the register and just clicked "X" in the Search box to exit Search mode.
What is your register's Sort sequence? By ascending Date? Other?
Are you making changes or deletions to the register in one or more of the shown transactions?

Excellent response. I too am using Q 2020 R 23.17. However your comment about clicking X in the Search box to exit the Search mode was the key. I have a tendency to simply erase the search term and that is what takes me to the top (start ) of my register. If I click on the X, it takes me to the end of the register. From now on I will click on the X. Problem solved – thanks.
