I am trying to understand the definition of the Difference figure presented on the upper right side of the budget. It states it is for the year if I am viewing the monthly or 12 month screen.

That is the Entire Budget year difference (for the actual transactions in your register.) It is the beginning of the year, hence why that number might appear large or unusual early in the year.
The upper right amount will always be the yearly amount. The 1 month view will show the actual month. Or, in the twelve month view, you can click down on the year to choose to show YTD amounts:
If you switch that setting to show Entire Budget Year, you will see that $6632.21 in the summary.5

Thanks! Your explanation and the "Entire Budget Year" setting does make it understandable. To be honest I didn't even know that setting was even there.1
