I cannot get to the screen where all my accounts - checking, savings, cash, credit card, etc. - are listed on the left column

That's called the sidebar. You may have inadvertently collapsed it. Try this:
First, close every window (menu File > Close Window) until there are no more windows open, but you still see the Quicken menu at the left end of the menu bar.
Next, click menu Window > YourFileName or keyboard Command-1
Now, do you see this at the top left?
The > icon indicates that the sidebar is collapsed. Click it to expand the sidebar. Or alternatively, you can click the $ icon just below it to directly select an account without expanding the sidebar.Quicken Mac Subscription; Quicken Mac user since the early 90s5
