when i sell a stock I am required to enter either lot identification or average cost.

Mutual Funds, when correctly recorded in your Security List, should have the "Use average cost" flag enabled.

For stocks you always need to select which lots you are selling. Select FIFO except when you have instructed the broker to sell specific lots.
