    Hi Frank,

I’ve gone to “File” > “File Operations” > “Validate and Repair” . “Validate”. I’ve entered check marks in the “Validate File”; “Rebuild Lots”. However the instructions says select “Correct Investing Price History”. I don’t find that selection . . . I find “Delete Investing Price History”. Is the “Correct” option the same as the “Delete” option?

    Hi Dave,

Is it possible to not select the "delete investing price history"? In other words if you can leave that one blank - do that for now.  If you have to select it to continue - then select it.

    Hi Frank.

Below as a copy of the log I got from the Validation run. This is the first Validation run I did. I had only put a check in “Validate File”; I had not put a check in “Rebuild Investing Lots”. On this first run, there is a note at the bottom saying; “The following transaction(s) involving transfers appear to be damaged. You should delete them and recreate as appropriate”. These transactions are not shown below. I did not include them because there are about 100 transaction, and I’m not about to delete and recreate these 100 transactions, which do not involve investment accounts.

I did the validate run a second time, this time I put a check mark in the ‘Rebuild Investing Lots”. During this second run, I was told “The resulting value is too big. Please enter it as more than one transaction.” Well I had no idea on how to do this. So I just clicked on OK and the validation continued. But the log that was produced after this second run didn’t show anything regarding transactions involving transfers appear to be damaged. It just ended saying ‘Validation Completed”. The Log for the second validation run is also shown below.

    Hi Dave,

You may have noticed that the 2nd run of validate indicated "Rebuilt investing lots", which may have an effect on the problem.  You should try to make the sale entry and see if the correct number of share show up when you check "Sell all shares in this account"

    Hi Frank,

I tried the "Sell all shares in the account. Unfortunately it still shows the number of shares as 579.987.

    Sorry, Dave.

This one has me completely baffled.  I thought that we had it solved a couple of times but no.  I was going to suggest that you try "super validate" but I am now doubting that will help.

The only other thing I can suggest would be for you to contact Quicken Support  here' a link:   https://www.quicken.com/support#windows

And I think you should do "Live support" rather than the Chat and tell them to read this thread when you first get connected.  https://community.quicken.com/discussion/comment/20082120#Comment_20082120

    Good luck!

    Frank,

Thanks for all your help on this . . . very much appreciated. I will give Quicken Live Support a call and see if they have someone who might be able to resolve this problem. Since I will be making a phone call, how should I forward the link that I should tell them read?

Dave,  when you get on the call - just tell them it is a "conversation in the Quicken Community and give them the number at the end of the link - 20082120

    > My brokerage account shows a correct total of 900 shares for a stock I sold. I sold all 900 shares. However, when I click on "Enter Transactions" and enter the sale information, Quicken says "Number of shares selected is more than available". Based on the number of shares Quicken says I have available, the 900 shares is over by 320.013 shares. The 900 shares which Quicken shows in the account is correct, but "Enter Transactions" is incorrect. I have no idea how to correct this. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    I'm having the same problem. <img alt="" src="https://community.quicken.com/resources/emoji/confused.png" height="20">

For security-A Sell All didn't clear out all of the shares that I have. For Security-B it sold more shares than I have, leaving a negative balance. They both correctly show the total shares on the day before.

For security-B I just edited it to the correct number. On the date of sale "Holdings" shows no shares.

But for security-A I'm getting that error when I try to edit and put in the correct number of shares. The day after the sale date Holdings still shows that there are available shares.  But I can't sell them.

I've run validate and rebuild investment lots.

One issue I have come across is hidden placeholder entries made by Quicken for various reasons. I would go to Edit on the file menu then to Preferences, scroll down the "Select Preference Type" list and select "Investments." Make sure that the checkbox for "Show hidden transactions" on the righthand side has a checkmark. If not, click the box to show hidden transactions and review the transactions again. It that doesn't fix the issue then, the file may be corrupted.

Quick edit: I just wanted to point out that for certain transactions Quicken does not show them in the placeholder section. So you can have the Placeholders section showing (0) meanwhile there are adjusting transactions up in the register. I found this out while reconciling an account and noticing that when I went to "Holdings" the total # shares didn't match the total I got from adding up all the transactions in the register. After I changed the preferences to "Show hidden transactions" there was an erroneous entry for a stock split.

@WyoDave323 I see you have been through a lot of steps with @Frankx and I am going to try to not be repetitive. These are investigative steps I would be using.

You indicated no placeholders. In your Preferences settings, do you have the Investments set to "Show hidden transactions." Placeholders can be classed as hidden transactions and that can lead to spurious behavior. Just seeking confirmation that there are no placeholders for your BAC holding.

Over time, have you had other sales of BAC in this account?

Do I follow correctly here: Up until 2008 time frame, you were acquiring shares via dividend reinvestment. Since some time point round then, you have had a consistent 900 shares held?

Were any of the shares you are now trying to sell a result of ESPP transactions?

With a good backup at hand — Through a portfolio view As Of date, you should be able to step back in time to when you first got to the 900 share level. Using that date, can you 'sell' 900 shares the next day? Can you use a simlar process to determine when you could or could not sell the right number of shares?
