missing categories in list of categories

why are categories missing that I use every day, ie they do not show up in the window/categories list

    The screenshot only shows a Friendlys and Subway transactions with NONESSENTIAL:Food:Dining Out as the Category. There is no Category List picture.

    But, if I had to guess, you might have chosen to only show unused Categories. Verify that you do not have this option checked when you click on the gear icon at the bottom of the Category list:
