Malware and rootkit

My Windows PC encountered an extremely persistent attack which appeared to even infect the BIOS. Had to get a completely new computer. Installed Quicken, no problems, but after I opened the account file from the data recovery disk the same attack! Was not connected to internet, to the point that I had the WiFi and Bluetooth disabled. Is it possible for malware to somehow append malicious code into a Q file?

What type of media is your data recovery disk? USB drives can be infected. Do you have anti-virus software? If so, have you scanned the drive?

I had the data on a USB stick. I didn't think to scan the drive before I opened up the Q file.
