How do I delete pinned and recent files when the normal method does not work?

When I right click on the Quicken icon on the task bar I am presented with pinned and recent files. Some of those files no longer exist but I cannot unpin the or delete them when I right click on them. Of course also can't open them. No errors presented, just the file names remain. The category selected is not precisely my problem but couldn't enter without selecting something.

    Bring up the pinned list. Right-click a file entry and select "Remove from this list" in the popup.
    And that's the only answer I can come up with, even though you said you already tried it. Next stop: Ask a Windows expert.

    As far as I can see there isn't any special "right click" action for the recently used file list.
    It does the same thing whether you left click or right click.  That is, it tries to open the data file, and when it can't it gives you the option to remove it from the list.

    If that isn't working for you, you can try the "old school" method.
    Close Quicken.
    With Windows File Explorer go to: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Quicken\config and double click on QUSER.INI.

    In that file you will see this list:
    [RecentFiles]
    1=c:\Quicken\Current
    2=C:\Quicken\Online
    3=
    4=

    Do not remove any of these lines, just remove files that don't exist after the equal sign.

    Thank you! I will try that. I thought someone might know.

    There is a right click. It then comes with several options depending on whether file name is penned or recent.

    The offending file names were not in Quser.ini. It had only the good file names. Quicken must not be using that ini file. Wonder what other ini file it could be using. If you just run Quicken, it does bring up the most recent file. And one of the pinned files you see when you right click is correct and the other is not. Also, not all the good files are in the recent list. Quicken is getting that info from some other file.

    The two files you see in my list are on my Recent File list, and that file has always been where they are stored.  The new feature is only to remove them when you click on them and they have been deleted.

    What do you mean by "pinned"?

    Oh sorry, now I see what you are talking about.  Quicken doesn't maintain the pin list for the taskbar icon.  Windows does.  If that is what you are talking about and the right click doesn't work, I don't know how to fix it.  It is probably something in the registry.  Maybe asking on Windows site might get you an answer.

    By the way, I just deleted the quser.ini and let it create a new one and that for certain proved that quicken was taking care of task bar recent and pinning.

    I actually like asking other support sites like this one:

    And in fact, a quick search of it came up with what is probably needed:
