How to manually enter an investment transaction (Q Mac)
ken deemer
I have sold an asset that I have tracked outside of Quicken. I have received the cash in my account and simply want to allocate it between Return of capital and Capital Gain (as a split transaction). I can't find any way to do this short of entering all of the numerous individual transactions and letting Quicken sort it out. Or I can create completely separate and parallel categories for Investments:Return of Capital, etc. Surely I am missing something.

How many "numerous individual transactions" are you talking about? 10, 20, more?
Setting up an offline investment account in Quicken and recording all buy, sell, dividend, etc., transactions over the years might be the best method.
If you want to take the shortcut and just add new categories with appropriate Schedule D tax lines, by all means, go ahead. Just consider how likely it is for you to get audited by the IRS ...
