What is a top level split transaction and why can't I find and replace a category in one.

When I do a find and replace a category it will not work because I get a message " You cannot replace the category or amount fields of top level split transactions." I have show matches with split checked. Can anyone tell me what this means. I believe I used to be able to replace catagories in a split transaction. What what is the hierarchy of split transactions.

    To change a category or dollar amount in a split category transaction you must go the the original transaction itself to edit the category and/or dollar amount.  It cannot be modified via Find & Replace nor, if the split categories involved transfers to/from other accounts, in the other accounts.
