Transactions showing up out of no where

I've used Quicken since the 1990's and I balance my accounts to the penny. The last couple of months suddenly my balances are off by large amounts. Today I suddenly have $4000 in "cash" which is a category I don't even use. A few weeks ago I had an imbalance in a checking account. All the transactions were there & accurate. The only way I could get back in balance was to adjust the beginning entry in 1996! I thought Quicken had finally got their stuff together, but if I have to figure out what is wrong every time I settle my accounts I might as well go back to paper journals. Quit messing with the accounting logic.
