Automatic categorization

I recently made some changes to categories and added some new ones, yet automatic categorization still picks the old ones, requiring me to catch and then change to the new ones. Is there a way to sunset a category so that it won't be picked automatically? I don't necessarily want to delete the old one, since I've got years of records using it.

Could this be a problem with the "Memorized Payees" list? Try deleting all the memorized payees which have the old category. Then memorize one of the transactions with the new category. Deleting these old memorized payees does not change any transactions which used them.

Have you checked your Memorized Payee List? There should be only one entry for each Payee Name and it should be using the desired correct category.
It might also be a good idea to mark each of these MPL entries "Locked" so it doesn't get changed when new transactions are recorded.
