it certainly is auto-catagorizing. Any ideas how to stop this?

Perhaps the Categories are coming from your Memorized Payee List.

Thank you! I cleaned up the memorized payees, there were many years worth deleted all prior to 2015, seems to have resolved the issues.0

Glad that fixed it.
To avoid clutter in your memorized payees, you can set the following options in Edit > Preferences > Data entery and Quickfill
- Un-check Automatically memorize new payees
- Check Remove Memorized payees not used in the last XX months. I set this to 18.
