Securities info type

What is the purpose of the securities type in Quicken? I primarily own ETFs, mutual funds, and stocks. Quicken categorizes some of my equity ETFs as stocks others as mutual funds. I have no problem fixing that. I just don't know what the purpose is. ETFs trade like stocks but own securities like mutual funds. I just don't want to mess anything up.
