Security Types and Asset Classes

I maintain a few different private equity investments (both funds and individual investments). I'd like to be able to see both liquid non liquid assets, and total portfolio in private funds vs other liquid. I need a way of marking these asset classes as such so I can report or show this way.
I roughly follow Eric Dunn's post here. However it gets a little more complicated than he alludes to on capital calls and distributions when the marks of the fund value keep changing. I can live with that, but the security types and asset classes needs to be extensible.
Thanks for any help.
Jeff.
